Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

Before Marcus could make a break for the doors, the heavy oak entrance of the ballroom burst open with a deafening crash.

A squad of armed federal agents and local police officers swarmed into the room, their boots pounding rhythmically against the marble floor. Leading the tactical unit was Captain Vance—not a relative of Arthur, but a decorated federal investigator who had been working covertly with Lucas for months.

"Marcus Thorne, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, and wire fraud," Captain Vance announced loudly, his voice cutting through the chaos. Two officers instantly stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by the shoulders and slamming him against the altar table, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"This is a mistake! You can't do this! I demand my lawyer!" Marcus thrieked, thrashing wildly as he was hauled toward the exit, his expensive tuxedo jacket ripping at the seams.

Elena dropped to her knees, sobbing hysterically as she realized she had lost everything. Her high-society dreams, her wealth, and her freedom vanished in a heartbeat. Two female officers approached her, reading her Miranda rights before pulling her up from the floor.

"And Elena Vance," Captain Vance added coldly, eyeing the weeping bride. "You are also under arrest for conspiracy to commit child abduction, document forgery, and extortion."

As Elena was dragged past Lucas, she lunged desperately toward him, her face twisted in pure hatred. "You ruined my life, Lucas! You’ll pay for this!"

Lucas didn’t even flinch. He looked down at her with absolute pity. "You ruined your own life the moment you thought a child’s life was a negotiable asset."

Within minutes, the ballroom was cleared of the conspirators. The stunned guests stood around in awkward silence, whispering in shock and quietly filing out of the venue, knowing they had just witnessed one of the biggest corporate and social scandals of the decade.

Lucas turned around and walked briskly toward his sister Sarah, who was still holding trembling little Chloe.

He knelt down on one knee, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He gently opened his arms. Chloe broke away from her aunt and lunged into her father’s embrace, sobbing into his shoulder.

"It's over, baby girl," Lucas whispered, kissing the top of her head repeatedly. "Daddy's here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or take you away from me. We're safe."

"Are we really safe, Daddy?" Chloe asked softly, her big, tear-filled eyes looking up into his face.

"Forever and always," Lucas promised.

Just as the emotional tension in the room began to settle, a sharp, unexpected sound echoed from the corner of the stage—a slow, rhythmic clapping.

Lucas froze. He slowly turned his head toward the shadowy side of the stage near the bridal dressing rooms.

A tall, elegant figure stepped out from the shadows, wearing a dark velvet evening gown. Her face was partially hidden beneath a wide-brimmed vintage hat, but a chilling, familiar smile was clearly visible on her lips.

"A magnificent performance, Lucas," a voice murmured—a voice that made Lucas's heart stop entirely. It was a voice he hadn't heard in six years, a voice belonging to someone the entire world believed was dead and buried.
