Chapter 1 - THE WAR ROOM AT DAWNThe rain didn’t just fall on the glass roof of Ward Tower; it hammered like gunfire against bulletproof armor.

I sat at the mahogany conference table on the sixty-fourth floor, still wearing my mud-splattered Vera Wang wedding gown. The white silk was ruined, stained dark brown around the hem where I had marched down the cathedral steps, but I refused to take it off. The crimson smear of my own blood on the lace collar served as a constant, cold reminder of what Adrian Vale had done to me three hours ago.

"Elena, please. Put this around you," my father, Julian Ward, whispered. His hand trembled as he draped a heavy cashmere coat over my bare shoulders.

The founder of Halcyon Hotels—a man who had brought down foreign cartels and outmaneuvered sovereign wealth funds—was weeping. He looked at my swollen cheek, where Adrian’s handprint had matured into a deep, ugly purple bruise.

"I let you marry a monster," Julian said, his voice cracking into a rasp. "I let you walk into that cathedral alone because I wanted to respect your independence. I should have slaughtered him the moment he looked at you."

"You couldn't have stopped it, Dad," I said, my voice dangerously calm. I picked up a silver spoon, dipped it into an untouched cup of black coffee, and watched my reflection in the dark liquid. My left eye was bloodshot. My pearl earring was still lying somewhere on the cold marble floor of St. Jude’s Cathedral. "Adrian spent eight months convincing me he was a savior. He thought I was a broke foster girl who got lucky with a twelve percent legacy stake in Halcyon. He believed he was elevating me."

"And his mother?" Julian asked, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table.

"Celeste smiled," I replied. The memory cut deeper than the physical pain. "When Adrian hit me, she leaned back in her pew and smiled like a woman watching her dog finally learn to obey. She thinks the Ward family name is just an urban legend. She thinks Halcyon belongs to the Vales now."

The double doors of the boardroom swung open. Marcus, my private head of security and driver, stepped in. He dropped a thick leather binder onto the table, along with three encrypted flash drives.

"The video footage from the cathedral altar is secured, Ms. Ward," Marcus announced, standing at strict attention. "The audio picked up every single whisper. We have Adrian demanding you transfer your shares. We have his best man, Brody Vance, admitting the forced transfer papers were backdated. And we have the precise acoustic impact of the blow."

"What about the reception?" I asked, raising my eyes.

"It is currently underway at the Grand Ballroom of the Halcyon Plaza," Marcus smirked slightly, though his eyes remained dead serious. "Adrian and his mother told the two hundred guests that you suffered a panic attack and were resting in the bridal suite. They are currently drinking $1,200 bottles of vintage Dom Pérignon that were charged directly to your personal credit card."

I stood up. The heavy silk of the ruined dress rustled against the hardwood floor.

"Cancel the card," I ordered softly. "In fact, freeze every asset tied to the Vale family's line of credit. Adrian thinks he married into money today. Let him discover what it feels like to be bankrupt before midnight."

"Elena," my father interrupted, standing beside me. "The board of directors is meeting at seven o'clock tomorrow morning. Adrian called an emergency session himself. He intends to use the forged signature on the share transfer document to declare himself executive chairman in your absence."

"He doesn't know you control fifty-one percent," I said, a slow, cold smile spreading across my face. "He thinks my twelve percent was the tipping point to overthrow you. He has no idea that the remaining thirty-nine percent wasn't held by institutional investors—it was held in a private trust created for Julian Ward's long-lost daughter."

I turned to Marcus. "Call our media team. Do not release the altar video to the press yet."

Marcus frowned. "Ms. Ward? That video would destroy him publicly within ten minutes."

"Destruction is too quick, Marcus," I replied, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing city skyline. "Public humiliation is just an appetizer. Adrian Vale built his entire life on the illusion of aristocratic perfection. He sacrificed his soul to be accepted by the billionaires of this city. I am not going to just take his reputation. I am going to strip him of his fortune, his name, his freedom, and his mother's precious legacy."

I pulled the remaining pearl earring from my right lobe and tossed it into the wastebasket.

"Let him feel like a king for six more hours," I whispered. "Tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM, the execution begins."
