Chapter 2 - THE AMBUSH AT THE BOARDROOMAt 6:45 AM, the executive floor of Halcyon Hotels headquarters was buzzing with frantic energy.

Adrian Vale stood before the mirror in the private executive washroom, adjusting his silk tie. He looked immaculate—a tailored Italian suit, cufflink carved from black onyx, and a confident smirk plastered across his handsome face. Beside him, his mother, Celeste, was sipping an espresso, wearing a pearl necklace that cost more than a family home.

"Are you sure the girl won't show up?" Celeste asked, reapplying her red lipstick. "She looked terrified yesterday, Adrian. But she isn't stupid. What if she goes to the police about the slap?"

Adrian laughed, a rich, dismissive sound that echoed off the marble walls. "Mother, please. Elena is a nobody. She spent eighteen years in the state foster system before landing an administrative desk job here. She was so desperate for love that she practically begged me to notice her. A girl like that doesn't go to the police. She hides under her covers, cries, and waits for her prince to forgive her."

"And the signature on the share transfer?" Celeste pressed her eyebrows together. "Brody said she didn't sign it at the altar."

"It doesn't matter," Adrian sneered, checking his gold Rolex. "I had our notary sign off on it last night. The document states she transferred her twelve percent stake to me upon the verbal solemnization of our marriage. With her twelve percent, plus the proxy votes I bought from the minority investors, I now control forty-four percent of Halcyon Hotels. Old man Julian Ward only holds forty. Today, I remove Julian as CEO, declare him mentally incapacitated, and take control of a four-billion-dollar empire."

"You are brilliant, my son," Celeste beamed, touching his cheek. "The Vale name will finally take its rightful place at the top of high society."

Five minutes later, Adrian strode into the boardroom like a conqueror entering a defeated city. The twenty-four members of the board were already seated along the massive glass table. Brody Vance, his best man and corrupt attorney, sat beside an empty chair reserved for the executive chairman.

Julian Ward sat at the far end of the table, his face unreadable, his arms crossed over his chest. He looked tired, aged, and silent.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Adrian announced loudly, slamming his leather briefcase onto the glass table. "Given the unfortunate health crisis suffered by my new wife, Elena, yesterday—and given the obvious cognitive decline of our current CEO, Mr. Ward—I have called this emergency meeting to institute a immediate leadership transition."

"On what grounds, Mr. Vale?" one of the senior directors asked, raising an eyebrow.

"On the grounds of absolute control," Adrian declared, whipping out a stack of paper. "As of 4:00 PM yesterday, upon our marriage, Elena Ward transferred her full twelve percent stake in Halcyon Hotels to my asset management firm. Combined with the proxy agreements signed by six other shareholders in this room, I now command forty-four percent of voting rights. Mr. Ward holds forty percent. Therefore, under Article 4 of the corporate charter, I am invoking an immediate vote of no confidence against Julian Ward."

Brody Vance stood up, adjusting his glasses. "As legal counsel for Mr. Vale, I confirm the validity of these documents. The transfer is complete. Julian Ward is stripped of his executive authority effective immediately."

Adrian smiled triumphantly, looking down the table at Julian. "It's over, old man. You can keep your pension and your title as founder. But Halcyon belongs to me now. Pack your office by noon."

Silence stretched across the room. Julian didn't flinch. He didn't even look angry. He simply picked up his pen and tapped it against his notepad three times.

The thick mahogany doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with a heavy thud.

The sharp, rhythmic click of high heels echoed against the marble floor.

Every head in the room turned.

Adrian’s confident smile froze instantly. His blood ran cold.

Walking into the room was not the shy, subservient foster girl who wore off-the-rack dresses and looked down at her shoes.

It was a queen clad in a blood-red Alexander McQueen suit. Her hair was pulled back into a flawless, razor-sharp bun. Her posture was erect, commanding, and cold as ice. The dark purple bruise on her left cheek was fully exposed, unhidden by makeup, standing out against her pale skin like a brand of war.

It was Elena.

Behind her walked four men in dark navy suits carrying silver briefcases, followed by Marcus and three federal marshals.

"You're late for your execution, Adrian," Elena said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor through silk.
