Chapter 5 - THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTEDBy 2:00 PM that afternoon, news of the catastrophe had reached every financial news outlet in the country.

Wall Street Journal: "HALCYON HEIRESS UNMASKED: ADRIAN VALE ARRESTED FOR FRAUD AFTER ALTAR ASSAULT."
Bloomberg: "VALE ENTERPRISE SHARES CRASH TO ZERO AS THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR TAX FRAUD EXPOSED."
Adrian was released on a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bail paid by his remaining corrupt friends, but his freedom felt like a cage.
He sat in the living room of his penthouse suit, clutching a glass of cheap whiskey. The room was in complete disarray. The bank had already placed seizure tags on his Italian furniture, his artwork, and his luxury cars parked in the garage downstairs.
His phone was ringing off the hook. Hundreds of text messages flooded his screen—creditors demanding immediate payment, news reporters asking for comments, and threat after threat from dark, untraceable numbers originations from East Asia.
The door to the penthouse clicked open.
Brody Vance walked in, his suit disheveled, sweat pouring down his forehead. He carried a duffel bag stuffed with gold bars and stack of cash.
"Adrian, we have to run," Brody gasped, hyperventilating. "The FBI just issued a warrant for my arrest. The state prosecutor is filing felony assault and conspiracy charges against you by morning. Elena’s legal team is destroying us! They bought out our loan notes from the offshore bank! She owns our debt now, Adrian! Elena owns us!"
Adrian dropped his whiskey glass. It shattered on the marble floor.
"What do you mean she owns our debt?" Adrian whispered, his eyes wide with horror.
"The twenty-four million dollars you owed to the syndicate in Macau?" Brody screamed, tearing his hair out. "Elena bought the debt contract from them this morning for cash! She didn't just buy it—she demanded immediate settlement under the penalty of asset liquidation! She is foreclosing on everything you own! The penthouse, your family's estate in the Hamptons, your mother's jewelry... everything!"
Before Adrian could respond, his phone chimed with a loud notification.
It was a video message from an unknown number.
Adrian opened it with shaking thumbs.
The video showed his mother, Celeste, sitting in a cold, fluorescent-lit interrogation room at the precinct. She was crying hysterically, her expensive makeup smeared across her face, screaming as police officers read her additional charges of grand larceny.
Then, the screen cut to a live video feed from a black sedan parked directly outside Adrian's penthouse building.
The window rolled down.
Elena Ward sat in the backseat, wearing dark sunglasses. She looked directly into the camera, holding a slender silver pen.
"Hello, Adrian," her voice spoke through the phone speakers, clear and terrifying. "I am standing outside your building. In exactly ten minutes, the sheriff's department will arrive to lock the doors of your penthouse and throw you onto the street. You have nothing left. No money, no corporate title, no friends, and no mother to save you."
"Elena! Please!" Adrian yelled into the phone, though it was just a recorded video message. "Stop this!"
"You told me at the altar yesterday not to embarrass you again," Elena's recorded voice continued, cold and unyielding. "I am not embarrassing you, Adrian. I am erasing you. Enjoy the cold floor tonight. It’s the same cold floor my earring fell on when you hit me."
The video cut to black.
Seconds later, the loud, thunderous banging of police heavy boots resounded against the heavy oak front door of the penthouse.
"FBI AND COUNTY SHERIFF! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY! WE HAVE A SEIZURE WARRANT FOR ALL PROPERTY!"
May you like
Brody panicked, dropping his duffel bag and sprinting toward the emergency fire exit at the back of the suite.
Adrian sat frozen on his sofa, staring at the door as it was kicked open with a shattering roar.
