Chapter 6 - THE RAT IN THE CORNERThe night air was freezing as Adrian walked aimlessly through the rain-slicked alleyways of the industrial district.

Two hours ago, federal agents had stripped him of his designer suit, replacing it with his gym clothes before seizing his phone, his watch, and his wallet. They had tossed him out into the alley behind his own building like trash.
He had no money for a taxi, no friends willing to answer his calls from payphones, and nowhere to go. Every high-society contact he had spent a decade cultivating had blocked his number within minutes of the news breaking.
His left cheek throbbed—not from a physical hit, but from the sheer, burning embarrassment of his total collapse.
He stopped outside a dingy, late-night diner near the docks. Inside, a small television mounted on the wall was playing the local news.
Through the rain-streaked window, Adrian saw his own face on the screen. Below it, bold red text scrolled across the bottom: MANHUNT UNDERWAY FOR BRODY VANCE; ADRIAN VALE FACES 15 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR FRAUD AND ASSAULT.
"Fifteen years..." Adrian choked out, pulling his hoodie tight over his head.
Suddenly, a sleek, black luxury sedan pulled up to the curb beside him, its engine idling silently like a hunting predator.
The rear window rolled down slowly.
Elena sat inside, warm, immaculate, and regal. The soft orange glow of the car's interior lights illuminated her porcelain face. Beside her sat Julian Ward, reading a leather-bound book without even bothering to look up at Adrian.
"Elena..." Adrian gasped, staggering toward the car, his hands pressed against the wet glass. "Elena, please! Look at me! I am on the street! I have nothing! I haven't eaten in twelve hours! Please, just give me a chance to explain!"
Elena lowered her sunglasses slightly, staring down at him as if he were an insect crawling on the asphalt.
"You look hungry, Adrian," she said softly. "Is this what you were afraid of? Being a nobody? Being poor like the orphan girl you thought you were marrying?"
"I was wrong! I was stupid! My mother pushed me into it!" Adrian sobbed, falling to his knees in the mud beside the car door. "She wanted the money! She forced me to sign those papers! I love you, Elena! I swear to God I love you!"
"You didn't love me, Adrian," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute truth. "You loved the idea of taking what wasn't yours. You loved the power of humiliating a woman you thought was weaker than you."
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, plush velvet box.
She opened it. Inside was the eight-carat diamond engagement ring that Adrian had bought her—a ring he had purchased using credit cards he had opened under her name without her knowledge.
"Do you remember what I said when I took this off at the altar?" Elena asked.
Adrian wept, wiping mud and rain from his eyes. "You... you told the guests to enjoy the reception..."
"I also said that everything had already been paid for," Elena replied.
She held the ring out the window, hovering it over a storm drain choked with dirty, rushing rainwater.
"No... Elena, no! That ring cost three hundred thousand dollars!" Adrian screamed, reaching out desperately.
Elena opened her fingers.
The ring fell, glittering briefly under the streetlights before disappearing into the black, filth-filled sewers below with a quiet clink.
"Now," Elena said, signaling the driver. "Everything is truly paid for."
"Wait! ELENA!" Adrian shrieked, lunging for the door handle, but Marcus stepped out from the front passenger seat, slamming a heavy hand against Adrian's chest, sending him sprawling backward into the muddy gutter.

"Stay down, Mr. Vale," Marcus warned, his voice low and lethal. "If you come within ten feet of Ms. Ward again, I won't call the police. I will handle you myself."
The sedan accelerated smoothly into the dark, rain-soaked night, leaving Adrian screaming in the gutter, surrounded by dirty water and total ruin.
