Chapter 1 - The Sleeping Giant WakesThe hospital landline felt heavy, plastic, and cold beneath my palm, but the moment I dialed Marcus Vance’s direct office extension, the fog of exhaustion cleared from my mind.

"Vance & Sterling," a crisp, professional voice answered.
"Marcus. It’s Grace," I said, my voice barely more than a raw whisper.
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end. "Grace? My god, we’ve been trying to reach you for months. Daniel completely isolated you after the wedding, cut off your professional circles... Where are you? Your father called us frantic last week—"
"Marcus, listen to me very carefully," I interrupted, cutting through the shock. My eyes drifted past the ICU glass partition where tiny tubes disappeared into Noah’s translucent skin. "My son is fighting for his life in the pediatric intensive care unit. My husband, Daniel, locked me in our house without a car, stole my wallet, left a newborn with a respiratory infection, and flew to Cabo San Lucas with his mistress, Celeste Vance."
A heavy, murderous silence fell over the line. Marcus Vance wasn't just my former senior partner; he was the most ruthless corporate and family law litigator in the tri-state area. He had taught me everything I knew.
"Did you say Cabo?" Marcus’s voice dropped an octave, turning into the cold, surgical tone he reserved for hostile corporate takeovers. "And the child?"
"Pneumonia induced by acute respiratory syncytial virus. Neglect, abandonment, and reckless endangerment," I recited, feeling the cold steel of my legal mind locking back into place. "Vivian, his mother, is already here trying to orchestrate a cover-up to protect his assets and social standing. Marcus... I need to annihilate him. Every cent. Every asset. Every square inch of the real estate empire we built together while he took the credit. I want him legally, financially, and socially destroyed."
"Consider it done," Marcus said softly, a dark promise humming through the wires. "What do you need first, Counselor?"
"Freeze everything. Personal accounts, corporate accounts, the offshore trust in the Cayman Islands he thought I didn't know about. And Marcus? Don't file for a standard divorce. File an emergency ex-parte asset seizure order for gross dissipation of marital funds, coupled with a criminal neglect complaint for child endangerment. Make sure the local police precinct has the flight manifests and hotel receipts I just forwarded to your secure email."

"Grace," Marcus paused, a hint of fierce pride in his tone. "Welcome back. Let's show them what happens when you wake a sleeping lioness."
As I hung up the phone, the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of Noah’s heart monitor steadied. For the first time in five days, I didn't cry. I smiled. A cold, feral smile that would have terrified Daniel if he had been here to see it.
