Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal UnveiledA nurse in crisp medical scrubs walked out of the upstairs hallway, carrying a soft blue bundle wrapped snugly in a blanket. She descended the stairs with slow, deliberate grace, stepping past Daniel, who was still pinned against the foyer wall in handcuffs.

The nurse walked straight over to me, gently handing the warm bundle into my arms.

Noah let out a soft, sleepy yawn, his tiny chest rising and falling with steady, perfect health, completely oblivious to the dramatic storm raging around him.

Daniel froze, staring upward with wide, tear-filled eyes as he saw his son breathing peacefully, alive and well. A wave of profound, desperate relief washed over his face, instantly replaced by a fresh wave of paralyzing confusion.

"He’s... he’s alive," Daniel choked out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "He’s okay... Thank God, Grace, thank God..."

"Don't you dare thank God, Daniel," I said coldly, cradling Noah tightly against my chest as I stepped down the final step. "You didn't care if he lived or died when you packed your bags and flew to Mexico. If it weren't for Mrs. Alvarez and the ICU doctors, my son would be in a graveyard right now while you were sipping margaritas."

Daniel sobbed openly, his legs giving out beneath him as Officer Miller forced him down onto his knees on the hardwood floor. "I’m sorry... Grace, I was stupid, I was blind, I made a mistake—"

"A mistake?"

A sharp, authoritative voice echoed from the front doorway.

Everyone turned. Standing in the open doorway, flanked by two armed security guards and carrying a thick leather briefcase, was Vivian Hartman—Daniel’s mother. Her pearl earrings seemed to mock her as her immaculate posture stiffened in sheer horror.

Vivian had driven over expecting to smooth things over with a checkbook and her usual social manipulation, only to walk right into a crime scene.

"Daniel! What is the meaning of this?!" Vivian shrieked, marching into the foyer, her eyes darting between the police officers, Marcus Vance, and her handcuffed son. "Officer, release my son immediately! Do you know who we are?! This is a gross miscarriage of justice!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a pristine legal document from his briefcase and holding it out toward Vivian with a chilling smile.

"Ah, Mrs. Hartman. Perfect timing," Marcus said smoothly. "We were just about to have your personal assets frozen as well."

Vivian stopped dead in her tracks, her manicured hand flying to her pearls. "My... my assets? What are you talking about, you ambulance-chasing parasite?"

"Co-conspirator," Marcus corrected casually. "Our forensic accountants uncovered clear paper trails proving that you not only aided and abetted Daniel’s corporate embezzlement by laundering funds through your charitable foundation, but you also actively participated in concealing child neglect by threatening a witness—Grace—at the hospital."

Vivian’s face drained of color, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "That’s... that’s completely fabricated! I did nothing of the sort!"

"We have your text messages, Mrs. Hartman," I spoke up, my voice cutting through the foyer like a razor blade. I looked down at her with absolute pity and contempt. "Every single instruction you gave me at the hospital bed, every threat about 'protecting the family name' while my son was fighting for his life. It’s all documented. Marcus filed the criminal accessory charges ten minutes ago."

Vivian staggered backward, her expensive leather heels slipping on the wet floor as she grabbed onto the console table for support. She looked at Daniel kneeling in handcuffs, then at Celeste standing frozen in the doorway, and finally at me—holding a healthy baby and surrounded by the full weight of the law.

We were just getting started.
