Chapter 8: The Child They Buried Wasn't Theirs

The investigator rushed back into Jonathan's room.

He laid the old photograph beside Eleanor.

"Look carefully."

At first, she saw nothing unusual.

Then...

Her hands began to tremble.

"The birthmark..."

Jonathan whispered,

"Our daughter had a heart-shaped birthmark on her left wrist."

Everyone looked at the little girl in the photograph.

Nothing.

No birthmark.

Eleanor's face turned white.

"This..."

"This isn't our daughter."

Jonathan nodded slowly.

"They switched the babies."

"The night the mansion burned."

The room spun with disbelief.

"For twenty-three years," Jonathan said, "we mourned a child who was never ours."

The investigator immediately reopened the cold case.

Within hours, old DNA evidence was rushed to a federal laboratory.

Just after midnight...

The results arrived.

The investigator opened the envelope with shaking hands.

He read the first page.

His breathing stopped.

Eleanor grabbed his arm.

"What is it?"

He looked at Jonathan.

"The DNA confirms it."

"The child buried twenty-three years ago..."

"...was not related to either of you."

Silence consumed the room.

Jonathan stared into the darkness.

"So Emily is still alive."

The investigator nodded.

"Yes."

"But there's something even worse."

He handed Jonathan the second page of the report.

Jonathan's hands shook as he read it.

His face lost all color.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Eleanor snatched the report.

Her scream echoed through the hospital.

According to the DNA comparison...

The biological daughter of Jonathan Hayes...

...was already working inside the hospital.

And she had been standing beside his bed every single day.

No one knew her real identity.

Not even she did.

Across the hallway...

The young intern paused as she looked at the family photo still clutched in her hand.

A tiny heart-shaped birthmark was visible...

May you like

...on her left wrist.

To be continued...
