Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Heart and the Dawn of ForeverThe alarm bells inside the operating theater screamed with relentless fury.

Dr. Harris slammed the defibrillator paddles against Owen’s chest, delivering a massive electrical shock that arched his body off the operating table.

"Charge again! Two hundred joules!" Dr. Harris shouted, sweat dripping down his forehead as he stared at the flatlining monitor line.

BZZZZT.

Another shock. The room held its collective breath. For five agonizing seconds, the monitor remained a flat, unbroken green line.

Then, a faint, rhythmic blip flickered back onto the screen.

Thump... thump... thump.

Owen took a deep, shuddering gasp of air, his eyes flying wide open as consciousness flooded back into his mind. He looked up at the blurred lights overhead, gripping the edge of the table with white knuckles.

"He's back! His natural sinus rhythm is stabilizing!" the technician yelled in sheer disbelief. "The native heart muscle is fighting back on its own!"

Three days later, bathed in the warm, golden afternoon sunlight of the upstate New York estate, Owen sat out on the veranda overlooking the vast green lawns.

He didn't need the transplant. Driven by an inexplicable biological miracle and the fierce, unyielding will to live for his granddaughter, his body had begun a natural cellular recovery that baffled medical science. The corrupt board members were locked away in federal prison, their empire dismantled forever, leaving Faulkner Enterprises entirely under Owen's unbreakable control.

Hannah came running across the grass, her laughter ringing out like wind chimes, carrying a bouquet of freshly picked wild daisies. She bounded up the steps of the veranda and leaped straight into Owen’s open arms.

Owen caught her effortlessly, swinging her up into the air as she giggled delightedly, pressing a daisy right into the lapel of his jacket.

"Are you ever going to go away to the hospital again, Daddy?" Hannah asked, looking up at him with her big, bright, trusting eyes.

May you like

Owen smiled, pulling her close against his chest, where a strong, steady, perfectly rhythmic heartbeat echoed with every second of life he had fought so hard to reclaim.

"Never, sweetheart," Owen whispered softly, looking out toward the endless horizon where the sun was rising to paint the sky in brilliant, beautiful colors. "We’re home."
