Chapter 2 - The Midnight Coup and the Viper’s ReturnThe rain lashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Owen’s penthouse suite. Down below, a sea of reporters buzzed like hornets around the private entrance. Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Marcus paced the length of the minimalist living room, his phone buzzing incessantly against his palm. "The board has frozen our corporate accounts pending the emergency injunction. If Sterling wins the court order tomorrow morning, he takes over the chairmanship, and every asset you own—including this penthouse and your medical trusts—will be seized for liquidation."
Owen remained seated at his desk, watching Hannah through the glass partition. She had fallen asleep curled up on the sofa, clutching the blanket, exhausted by the sudden whirlwind of safety.
"Sterling is playing dirty," Owen said quietly, his voice dangerously calm. "He’s using a sick man’s sudden adoption as a weapon to prove instability. But he made one fatal mistake."
"What's that?" Marcus asked, stopping his pacing.
"He thinks I’m already dead." Owen stood up, buttoning his tailored suit jacket despite the exhaustion weighing down his bones. "Call Judge Holloway. Wake him up if you have to. Tell him I want an emergency guardianship ratification hearing at 7:00 AM sharp, before Sterling’s lawyers can file their injunction."
"Owen, Holloway is notoriously conservative," Marcus warned. "If Sterling’s team presents your medical file showing you have less than six months to live, Holloway will hand custody over to the state—which Sterling has already bought off through the city welfare committee."
"Then we don't just rely on the law," Owen said, his eyes narrowing into a cold, calculating glare. "We show them who Hannah really is."
Suddenly, the secure intercom chimed. The voice of the head of security echoed through the room, frantic and breathless.
“Mr. Faulkner, we have a breach. Arthur Sterling just bypassed the lobby security with a federal court bailiff and two social workers. They’re coming up the private elevator right now.”
Marcus gasped, turning pale. "They moved faster than we calculated. They’re here to take her."
Owen didn't flinch. He walked over to the sofa, gently lifted the sleeping girl into his arms, and pulled her close to his chest. Her small breathing hitched, but she didn't wake up, instinctively burying her face against his shoulder.

The private elevator bell chimed with a crisp, echoing ding. The heavy security doors slid open, revealing Arthur Sterling, smug and impeccably dressed, flanked by two stern-looking state caseworkers and a flash-wielding photographer from the city’s largest tabloid.
"Well, well, well," Sterling drawled, stepping into the penthouse with a predatory smile. "Dying in your own fortress, Owen? And trying to traffic street urchins as heirs to hide your corporate shell companies? Game over, old friend."
