Chapter 3 - The Flashbulb War and the Secret DNA MatchThe camera flash strobed violently, blindingly bright in the dim penthouse. Arthur Sterling stood with his hands tucked into his tailored trousers, looking like a vulture surveying a fresh carcass.

"Put the child down, Owen," Sterling commanded, his voice dripping with condescending pity. "The Department of Child Services has an emergency removal order signed by Magistrate Vance. A terminal patient with zero legal standing cannot adopt a stray off the streets. It’s exploitation, plain and simple."
The two caseworkers stepped forward, their faces stern. "Mr. Faulkner, please hand the minor over voluntarily. Resistance will result in immediate felony charges for interference with custody."
Hannah stirred in Owen’s arms, blinking open her dark eyes. She looked at the flashing cameras, the strange adults surrounding them, and tightened her grip around Owen’s neck. She didn’t cry; instead, she whispered right into his ear, "Are they taking me back?"
"Never," Owen whispered back fiercely. He turned his piercing gaze onto Sterling, stepping forward until the distance between them was razor-thin.
"You think you’ve won, Arthur," Owen said, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars. "You think my heart is failing so fast I can't defend my own family. But you forgot one fundamental rule of business: never bet against a man who has nothing left to lose."
Owen flicked a finger toward Marcus. "Play the audio file."
Marcus slammed his tablet down onto the glass coffee table. Instantly, a crystal-clear recording began to broadcast through the room's surround-sound speakers.
“... sign off on the forged welfare reports, Sterling. If we get the judge to flag Faulkner’s adoption as human trafficking, the stock tanks, and I get the majority shares by tomorrow afternoon...”
Sterling’s smug expression dissolved instantly. His jaw went slack. "That... that’s a deepfake! That’s fabricated!"
"It’s biometric voice-print verification recorded inside your own private country club locker room forty minutes ago," Owen replied coldly. "Submitted to the federal prosecutor five minutes before you stepped out of that elevator. You didn't just commit corporate conspiracy, Arthur. You attempted witness and judicial tampering."
The two caseworkers exchanged panicked glances, slowly stepping backward away from Sterling.
"As for my health," Owen continued, raising his voice as he stepped closer to the trembling rival, "my legal team has already filed a preemptive emergency medical emancipation and open adoption decree under Section 44 of the State Family Code, backed by a biological trust that supersedes any state welfare committee."
Sterling lunged forward in blind fury. "You arrogant bastard—!"
Before Sterling could finish his sentence, the private elevator doors chimed a second time. Two federal marshals stepped out, their badges gleaming under the chandelier.
"Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, and fraudulent manipulation of judicial officers," the lead marshal announced, snapping steel handcuffs onto Sterling’s wrists as he thrashed in disbelief.
As Sterling was dragged away screaming curses, the room fell back into a heavy, breathless silence. Owen looked down at Hannah, who was watching the spectacle with wide, unblinking eyes.

"You're safe now," Owen murmured, kissing the top of her tangled hair.
But as the adrenaline faded, a sharp, white-hot knife of agony ripped straight through Owen’s chest. His knees buckled. The world tilted violently sideways, and darkness rushed in to swallow him whole.
