Chapter 9 - The Final ClimaxThe operating theater of the Zurich Cardiac Institute was a masterpiece of modern medical engineering. Overhead, surgical lights cast a brilliant white glow over the sterile stainless steel tables.

Owen lay flat on the operating table, sedated, his chest prepped for the most critical surgery of his life. Dr. Harris stood at the primary console, alongside a team of world-class cardiothoracic surgeons.

"Begin the bypass sequence," Dr. Harris instructed calmly, his hands steady over the console controls.

The heart-lung machine whirred to life, taking over Owen’s circulatory system as the surgical team prepared to initiate the chest cavity incision.

Suddenly, the secure communication monitor on the sterile wall lit up with an urgent, flashing red alert.

Marcus’s voice crackled through the secure audio link from New York, frantic and breathless.

“Dr. Harris! Owen! Can you hear me? You need to abort the surgery immediately!”

Dr. Harris paused, looking up at the intercom. "Marcus, we are mid-operation. We cannot abort now without risking fatal cardiac arrest!"

“It’s a trap!” Marcus shouted over the audio feed, the sound of keyboard clacking echoing furiously in the background. “We just intercepted an encrypted communication routing through Arthur Sterling’s offshore legal trusts. Sterling didn't act alone—he had a silent partner inside the Swiss medical board who tampered with the donor registry records!”

Dr. Harris froze, his scalpel hovering inches above Owen’s chest. "Tampered with the records? What are you talking about?"

“The donor heart scheduled for this procedure isn't a medical match!” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with terror. “It’s a genetically modified synthetic tissue laced with a slow-release cellular toxin designed to cause total organ failure within forty-eight hours of transplantation! If Owen receives that heart, it will finish what the cardiomyopathy started!”

In the operating room, absolute chaos erupted. The assisting nurse gasped, dropping a tray of surgical instruments onto the tile floor with a deafening crash.

"Check the donor tissue bio-marker sequence immediately!" Dr. Harris ordered, his face draining of all color.

A technician frantically tapped at the diagnostic terminal. "My god... the encryption key matches the toxin signature Marcus described! It’s a targeted biological hit!"

On the operating table, beneath the light sedation, Owen’s eyes suddenly fluttered open. His heart monitor spiked violently into a dangerous, erratic ventricular fibrillation. The alarm began to blare with a piercing, continuous shriek.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP—!

Owen couldn't speak, but his hand twitched instinctively toward the sterile tray, his fingers gripping the edge of the metal table as pain tore through his chest.

Dr. Harris grabbed the emergency defibrillator paddles. "Clear the table! Disconnect the donor line right now! Save him!"
