Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Council

Not everyone in the syndicate was ready to bow to a queen who had rewritten the blood pact.

Deep in a private social club in downtown Manhattan, three regional capos who had grown fat and lazy under Lucien's past distractions met in secret. They whispered about the shift in power, mourning the days when the mafia boss kept mistresses and ignored domestic affairs.

"She’s stripping our independent revenue streams," one capo muttered, slamming his whiskey glass onto the table. "If we let Serena Moretti manage the board, there won't be a penny left for us to skim by the end of the year."

"Then we remind Lucien who really keeps the streets running," another replied darkly. "A quiet warning. Nothing lethal, just enough to show him that a woman in the war room brings weakness."

They didn't know that every encrypted cell phone, private server, and intercom in the club had been compromised three weeks prior. They didn't know that Serena’s digital surveillance network was listening to every traitorous breath before it even left their lungs.
