Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Threshold

The hum of the fetal monitor spiked, a frantic, rhythmic shriek that echoed off the sterile green tiles of Delivery Room Four like a dying pulse.
Alessandro didn’t look at the monitor. He couldn’t. His gaze was locked entirely on Genevieve—his wife, his ghost, the woman he had spent two hundred and ten days hunting through the blood-soaked gutters of Manhattan and Brooklyn—cowering against scratchy hospital pillows.
"Mr. Moretti, please," the obstetrician stammered, her voice cracking under the suffocating weight of Alessandro's aura. She held up a shaking hand, as if a mere palm could halt a man who owned half the shipping docks on the Eastern Seaboard. "Mrs. Moretti is in active labor. Her blood pressure is through the roof. If you don't step back—"
"Shut your mouth," Alessandro whispered. It wasn't a shout. It was worse. It was the absolute, lethal quiet that preceded a hit.
Mateo Cruz, Alessandro’s shadow and right hand for over a decade, moved silently. A heavy, calloused hand clamped onto the back of the young resident’s white coat, yanking him backward with enough force to send him stumbling into a rolling stainless-steel tray of surgical instruments. The clatter of metal against tile was deafening, but Mateo didn't blink. His dark eyes remained fixed on the floor, trained like a sentinel.
"Boss," Mateo muttered, his voice low and gravelly. "Give her space. The doctor's right. The stress..."
"She thinks I brought death here, Mateo," Alessandro said, his chest heaving as he took another step toward the bed. The charcoal wool of his overcoat, damp and smelling of freezing rain and gunpowder, parted to reveal the custom-tailored obsidian suit beneath. "Eve. Look at me. Who told you that? Who put that poison in your head while you were hiding?"
Genevieve squeezed her eyes shut, another violent contraction arching her back off the mattress. A ragged, animalistic sob tore from her throat.
"You did," she choked out, her voice raw, tearing at Alessandro's heart with jagged glass. "Every enemy you've ever made, every throat you've ever slit in the dark... they don't die, Alessandro. They come looking for the things you love. When the safehouse in Queens burned down... when they told me you were dead..."
"I was hunting the bastards who torched it!" Alessandro roared, finally breaking, his composure shattering like safety glass. He reached the side of the bed, ignoring the frantic warning beeps of the monitors. He reached out, his massive, scarred hand trembling as he hovered inches from her face. "I tore down empires to find you, Eve. I gutted the entire leadership of the Syndicate because someone dared to touch my wife. And you think I’d let anything—anything—harm this child?"
Genevieve snapped her eyes open. They were wild, bloodshot, and burning with a terrified defiance that mirrored his own intensity.
"Then prove it," she whispered, her fingers digging into his wrist with desperate strength. "Kill the man standing outside this door."
Alessandro froze. The air in the room instantly dropped twenty degrees.
"What did you say?"
May you like
"He's been here the whole time, Alessandro," Genevieve wept, her breath hitching as the monitor shrieked again. "The man who helped me escape. The man who promised to keep me safe from your war. He’s right outside the glass. And he didn't come to watch our child be born... he came to collect the debt."
Before Alessandro could process the words, the heavy reinforced glass of the delivery room door shattered inward in a shower of glittering, lethal shards.
