Chapter 5 - The Countdown

"Get down!" Alessandro roared, lunging backward across the room with terrifying speed.

He threw his massive body over the hospital bed, shielding Genevieve and the newborn infant with his own torso just as the heavy glass of the window imploded inward.

BOOM.

The concussion wave hit the room like a physical blow, shattering the remaining monitors, ripping ceiling tiles down in a cloud of fiberglass and dust, and filling the air with the acrid, choking stench of plastic explosive and sulfur. Alarms shrieked a chaotic cacophony throughout the entire wing.

Coughing through the thick grey smoke, Alessandro pushed himself up, his ears ringing violently. He scanned the room through the haze. The window was completely gone, replaced by a jagged frame of smoking metal and frame.

"Eve! Are you okay? The baby?" he shouted, his hands frantically checking her over.

"We're... we're okay!" Genevieve coughed, clutching the crying infant tightly against her chest, miraculously unhurt beneath Alessandro's heavy shield. "What... what was that?!"

"A message," Alessandro said, his face hardening into absolute stone. He stood up slowly, stepping over a pile of shattered glass and drywall.

From the hallway, rapid footsteps approached. Mateo stumbled into the room, holding his bleeding shoulder with one hand, a submachine gun raised in the other, his eyes wild and scanning for targets.

"Boss! Sector four is compromised! The security feeds just went dead across the entire ground floor!" Mateo shouted over the blaring alarms. "We’ve got movement in the stairwells. Heavy equipment. Not local street punks—professional extraction teams. Mercenaries."

"Vincenzo’s backup," Alessandro spat, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "They tracked his transponder or they were waiting for a failure signal."

"What do we do, Alessandro?" Genevieve asked, her voice trembling slightly, though her eyes held a fierce, courageous spark that reminded him why he had fallen in love with her in the first place. "We can't stay here. The whole building is a trap."

"We don't stay," Alessandro said, his mind operating with the chilling, calculating precision of a general on a battlefield. "Mateo, how's your shoulder?"

"It's a flesh wound, boss. Still got a finger on the trigger," Mateo grunted, grimacing as he shifted his grip on the submachine gun.

"Good. Take the service elevator shaft down to the sub-basement. There's an armored Escalade parked in the bay with the emergency bypasses," Alessandro ordered, turning back to Genevieve and gently lifting her off the bed, wrapping her in a heavy wool blanket to keep the baby warm. "I'm going to go have a little chat with Vincenzo. Then we're burning this city behind us."

"Alessandro, no," Genevieve grabbed his arm, her eyes wide with terror. "If you go down to the garage alone, they'll trap you. There's a whole squad out there!"

"Let them try," Alessandro murmured, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to her forehead before handing her over to Mateo. "Get her to the car, Mateo. If I'm not down there in ten minutes, take the tunnel out to the docks and don't look back."

"Boss—"

"Go!" Alessandro barked.

Without waiting for an answer, Alessandro turned away, drawing his Glock, and plunged into the smoke-filled, burning corridor of the hospital, stepping directly into the lion's den.
