Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Pain was the first thing that returned. A dull, throbbing drumbeat behind Alessandro's eyes, accompanied by the sharp, metallic taste of blood pooling in his mouth.
Slowly, his eyes fluttered open.
He wasn't lying on the cold concrete anymore. He was strapped securely to a heavy steel chair in the center of an abandoned maintenance office overlooking the lower shipping bays. A harsh overhead incandescent bulb swung gently on a frayed cord, casting erratic shadows across the grimy walls.
Standing a few feet away, leaning casually against a workbench littered with rusted tools and grease rags, was a man wearing an expensive cashmere overcoat over a crisp white shirt.
He was holding a crystal tumbler filled with amber whiskey, swirling it lazily.
"Welcome back to the land of the living, brother," the man said, turning his head.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed, disbelief warring with pure, unadulterated rage.
It wasn't Vincenzo. Vincenzo was kneeling on the floor nearby, panting and coughing as a mercenary cut his zip-ties with a combat knife.
The man standing before him—the man pulling every string in the shadows of New York’s underworld—was Donato Moretti.
His own flesh and blood. His older brother, whom Alessandro had buried with full honors ten years ago after a supposed warehouse explosion in Sicily.
"Donato..." Alessandro choked out, his throat raw and dry. "You... you died in Palermo. I saw the casket. I identified the body."
Donato chuckled, a rich, dark sound that held no warmth whatsoever. He took a slow sip of his whiskey before setting the glass down on the workbench with a sharp clink.
"Ah, the wonderful world of dental records and paid-off coroners," Donato smiled, running a hand through his silver-streaked hair. "When you're trying to take over the family syndicate from the inside, little brother, sometimes it's convenient to let the world think you're roasting in a Sicilian oven while you build a real empire in America."
"You..." Alessandro strained against the heavy leather straps binding his chest and arms to the steel chair, the metal groaning under his immense strength. "You were behind the safehouse bombings. You leaked my locations to the Commission. You used Vincenzo as a puppet."
"Vincenzo is a useful idiot," Donato corrected smoothly, glancing dismissively at Vincenzo, who was now massaging his bruised wrists. "He wanted power; I wanted control. And together, we orchestrated the ultimate coup. We needed you out of the way, Alessandro. Your brutal, old-school mafia tactics were attracting too much federal heat. The board wanted stability. I provided it."
"And Genevieve?" Alessandro’s voice dropped to a lethal whisper, his eyes locking onto Donato’s with a glare so intense it seemed to scorch the air between them. "What did my wife and my son have to do with your boardroom politics?"
Donato’s expression shifted, a cold, calculating shadow passing over his features.
"Everything," Donato said softly, stepping closer until he was inches from Alessandro’s face. "Genevieve comes from old-money banking royalty in Zurich. Once she married you, her family trust was locked behind your name. But if you die... and she dies... or disappears into a permanent witness protection program under my guardianship..."
Donato smiled wide, revealing teeth that looked remarkably like a shark's.
"The entire multi-billion-dollar Moretti-banking conglomerate falls right into my lap. Clean, legal, and untraceable."
Before Donato could finish his sentence, the heavy metal door of the maintenance office blew inward in a deafening blast of splinters and steel.
Smoke billowed into the room as a heavy submachine gun barked a tight, controlled three-round burst.
Tack-tack-tack.
The mercenary standing guard by the door dropped instantly, lifeless, his tactical vest smoking.

Standing in the blown-out doorway through the billowing smoke, holding a smoking MP5 in his left hand, was Mateo Cruz. His right arm hung limp in a makeshift sling, but his eyes were locked on Donato with the fury of a starving wolf.
"Nobody moves," Mateo growled, stepping into the room. "Drop the glass, Donato. Or I turn your chest into Swiss cheese right now."
