Chapter 6 - The Basement Reckoning

The underground parking garage of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital smelled of stale exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and fresh blood.
The emergency lighting cast long, eerie yellow shadows across rows of parked sedans and ambulances. Overhead sprinkler pipes hissed, spraying a steady, freezing drizzle over the slick concrete floor.
Alessandro walked silently down the concrete ramp, his footsteps making a dull thud against the ground. In his right hand, the Glock was raised, the slide locked and loaded.
Tied securely to a concrete structural pillar near the service exit sat Vincenzo De Luca. His immaculate midnight-blue tuxedo was now stained with dirt and blood, his hands bound tightly behind his back with industrial zip-ties, a thick strip of duct tape plastered across his mouth.
Vincenzo’s eyes widened in terror as Alessandro stepped out from the shadows of the ramp. He began thrashing violently against the pillar, mumbling frantic muffled pleas through the tape.
Alessandro stopped three feet away, lowering the barrel of his gun just enough to stare directly into his former brother-in-law's panicked eyes.
"You really thought you could outplay me, Vincenzo?" Alessandro’s voice echoed off the concrete walls, cold and devoid of any mercy. "You thought you could steal my wife, burn my safehouses, and send a drone into my newborn son's nursery?"
Vincenzo shook his head frantically, whimpering, his legs kicking against the concrete.
Before Alessandro could pull the tape from Vincenzo's mouth to interrogate him about the mercenaries, the heavy metal security doors at the far end of the garage groaned and began to slide upward with a grinding mechanical screech.
Hsss.
Headlights cut through the gloom. Three matte-black tactical SUVs rolled into the garage in a tight, professional wedge formation, their tires crunching loudly on the gravel and broken glass.
The doors flew open simultaneously. Twelve heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear, night-vision goggles flipped down, and automatic rifles raised spilled out onto the floor, spreading out in a textbook flanking maneuver.
"Drop the weapon, Moretti!" a harsh voice barked through a tactical comms unit from behind the lead SUV. "Hands behind your head! Do it now or we turn you into Swiss cheese!"
Alessandro didn't drop his gun. Instead, a slow, dark smile crept across his lips.
He didn't run for cover. He simply stepped sideways, placing Vincenzo squarely between himself and the advancing line of mercenaries.
"Go ahead," Alessandro called out, raising his voice so it echoed clearly across the cavernous garage. "Tell your boss I said hello. But let's see how much your employers care about a dead asset."
The lead mercenary froze, his rifle barrel twitching uncertainly as he recognized the bound man tied to the pillar.
"Hold fire! Hold fire!" the mercenary commander shouted, lowering his rifle slightly. "Vincenzo is right there! Extract the target first!"
"Too late," a voice hissed from behind Alessandro.
Alessandro’s instincts screamed. He whipped around, but it was already too late.
From behind a concrete pillar that should have been empty, a shadow materialized. A heavy steel pipe swung through the air with blistering speed, catching Alessandro square across the temple.

The world exploded into a blinding flash of white light, followed by a heavy, roaring silence.
Alessandro staggered, his knees buckling beneath him as he hit the wet concrete, his vision swimming into darkness. The last thing he saw before the world went black was the smiling face of a man he thought he had killed five years ago.
