Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Nursery

The sterile lights of the recovery ward felt warmer, though the tension in the room remained thick enough to cut with a scalpel.

Genevieve lay propped up against the pillows, her face pale and damp with sweat, but her eyes were luminous as she cradled the small bundle against her chest. The infant was sleeping now, a tiny, perfect creature with a tuft of dark hair and miniature fists curled tightly against his chin.

The door clicked open. Alessandro stepped inside, his heavy coat discarded in the hallway, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms mapped with ancient scars and fresh scratches.

Genevieve didn't look up immediately, but her shoulders visibly relaxed as she heard his heavy, familiar footsteps approach the bed.

"Is he..." Alessandro’s voice caught. For the first time in his life, the words wouldn't come. He stopped three feet from the mattress, as if afraid that if he moved any closer, the illusion would shatter and he’d wake up back in the cold rain of the alleyways.

"He's healthy, Alessandro," Genevieve whispered softly, finally lifting her eyes to meet his. The terror and suspicion that had poisoned her voice earlier were gone, replaced by a deep, weary tenderness. "He has your eyes. And your stubbornness—he wouldn't stop crying until the doctor practically forced him into my arms."

Alessandro sank down slowly onto the edge of the mattress, ignoring the way the springs groaned under his weight. He reached out with a massive, calloused finger, gently brushing the baby’s soft cheek. The infant stirred, letting out a tiny, contented sigh.

A single tear carved a clean path through the soot and sweat on Alessandro's rugged face.

"I'm sorry, Eve," he murmured, his voice cracking. "I should have protected you better. I thought keeping you in the Queens safehouse would keep you away from the cartel wars... I didn't know Vincenzo had flipped. I trusted him like a brother."

"We trusted the wrong people, Alessandro," Genevieve said, leaning her head against his massive shoulder as he wrapped his arm around her, pulling them both close. "Vincenzo played a long game. He told me you were dead... he showed me forged documents, newspaper clippings... he said the Commission wanted our bloodline wiped out completely. I had to hide... for the baby's sake."

"He's going to pay for every second of fear he put you through," Alessandro promised, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal register again, though this time it was a promise of absolute protection rather than a threat. "Mateo has him tied up in the basement parking garage. No one is taking you from me again, Eve. No one."

Before Genevieve could answer, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed against the windowpane.

Alessandro’s head snapped toward the glass.

The delivery room was on the third floor of the private wing. There were no balconies outside. No scaffolding.

Just the sheer brick face of the hospital plunging down into the alleyway.

"Alessandro..." Genevieve whispered, her body instantly going rigid, clutching the baby tighter to her chest.

Alessandro stood up in a single fluid motion, sliding his hand beneath his waistband to grasp the heavy-calibrated Glock he kept tucked at his spine. He stepped slowly toward the window, pulling the privacy curtain back an inch.

Outside, clinging to the brick ledge in the freezing November drizzle, wasn't a hitman.

It was a drone.

A sleek, matte-black military-grade drone hovered silently against the double-paned glass, its red optical sensor blinking rhythmically in the dark. Taped securely to its landing skid was a small, blinking digital timer attached to a rectangular package wrapped in black electrical tape.

The timer read: 01:59... 01:58...

It was counting down.
