Chapter 2 - The Crimson Setup

Hook: The photo didn't lie. But the camera can be bought by the devil himself.

"Get down!" Marco roared.

He didn’t wait for her permission. With a violent shove, he broke the security chain, threw his weight against the door, and tackled Elena to the hardwood floor just as a second bullet tore through the living room drywall.

Within seconds, Marco’s security team breached the house, returning fire into the tree line with silenced weapons. The professional, calculated silence of the chaos was more terrifying than a firefight.

Marco pinned Elena beneath his heavy frame, his body acting as a human shield. For three years, she had hated him with every fiber of her being, but as his heart beat violently against her chest, a sickening realization washed over her: he was genuinely trying to protect her.

"Leo! Maya!" Elena screamed, trying to crawl toward the kitchen.

"My men have them! They're safe, Elena, I swear to God on my life, they are safe!" Marco held her face, forcing her to look at him. His amber eyes were wild. "We have to go. Now."

Ten minutes later, Elena found herself locked inside the armored sanctuary of Marco’s Escalade, clutching her crying twins to her chest. The vehicles tore away from the only peaceful life she had ever known, leaving Silver Ridge behind in a cloud of dust and exhaust.

The silence inside the SUV was suffocating. Marco sat across from her, his knuckles white as he gripped a tablet.

"Why are you doing this?" Elena wept, kissing Leo’s forehead. "You won, didn't you? You got your business, you got my family's estate, you got Clara! Why hunt me down now?"

Marco closed his eyes, a look of profound defeat crossing his aristocratic features. "I never touched Clara, Elena. Three years ago, the night you disappeared, I was drugged. I woke up alone in that bed. By the time I realized you had seen something, you were gone. Clara presented me with photos—photos of me and her. But I have spent three years and forty million dollars proving those photos were a deepfake."

Elena froze. "A deepfake? Marco, I saw you with my own eyes!"

"You saw what a precisely timed cocktail of scopolamine and a lookalike hired by your own family wanted you to see," Marco said, his voice dripping with venom. "Your father was bankrupt, Elena. He needed the Bellini merger, but he knew you would never agree to his corrupt terms. He needed Clara in my bed to blackmail me. But they underestimated one thing."

Marco leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers with terrifying intensity.

"They didn't know you were pregnant. And they didn't know that I would burn the city of Chicago to the ground to find you."
