Chapter 4 - Playing the Devil's Game

Hook: To catch a monster, you have to invite them to dinner. And Elena was tired of being the main course.
Marco gripped the phone, his voice instantly shifting into the cold, arrogant tone of the billionaire tycoon the world knew him to be.
"You're late, Clara," Marco said smoothly. "Elena is dead. My men couldn't get to her before the local local thugs handled it. But I managed to salvage something valuable."
On the other end of the line, there was a sharp intake of breath. "What do you mean? Salvage what?"
"Her children," Marco said, looking directly into Elena’s wide eyes. Elena held her breath, her heart hammering. "It seems my late wife kept a very significant secret from me. I have a son and a daughter. They are currently at my Wisconsin estate."
Clara laughed, a sound completely devoid of human warmth. "Oh, Marco... how tragic for her, but how fortuitous for us. A single father billionaire? The press will eat it alive. You need a woman by your side to help raise those poor, motherless bastards. I’m already on my way to Wisconsin to comfort you."
"I'll have the gates opened for you," Marco said, and hung up.
The silence that followed was deafening. Elena stared at him, her blood boiling. "Are you insane?! You just invited the woman who tried to kill me into the house where our children are sleeping!"
"She thinks you're dead, Elena," Marco said, grabbing her shoulders. His hands were warm, steadying her trembling frame. "As long as she thinks you're dead, she feels invincible. She will bring the original documents—the ones that prove she forged the blackmail and the contracts with the hitmen—because she thinks she’s coming here to sign a custody and marriage agreement with me. We need those documents to destroy her legally, or she will spend the rest of her life hunting our children from the shadows."
Elena looked toward the bedroom door where Leo and Maya slept peacefully. The fear that had dictated her life for three years suddenly evaporated, replaced by a cold, lethal resolve.

"What do you need me to do?" Elena asked, her voice dropping an octave.
Marco looked at her, a glimmer of profound admiration and old warmth returning to his eyes. "I need you to act as the ghost that breaks her."
