Chapter 3 - The Traitor in the Bloodline

Hook: Blood is thicker than water, but it's also much easier to spill.
The armored convoy bypassed Chicago entirely, pulling into a heavily fortified fortress in the secluded hills of Wisconsin. It was a secure compound disguised as a luxury estate.
Elena was given a private wing for the twins. As she tucked them into bed, exhausted from the trauma of the morning, she couldn't shake the terrifying truth Marco had dropped on her. Her father? Her sister? Could they really be capable of something so monstrous?
A soft knock sounded at the door. It was Marco. He had changed into a clean black shirt, but his eyes were bloodshot.
"They're asleep?" he asked softly.
"Yes," Elena said coldly, stepping out into the hallway and closing the door behind her. "Let’s assume I believe you, Marco. Let's assume you were framed. Who fired those shots today? Why would my father try to kill me?"
Marco handed her a manila folder. "Not your father. He died of a stroke six months ago. Clara took over what was left of the family syndicate. But she’s drowning in debt to the Balkan mafia. She needed my inheritance. As long as you were 'missing' and presumed dead, I couldn't legally remarry or pass my estate to an heir without a seven-year waiting period. But then, Clara discovered you were alive. And worse... she found out about the twins."
Elena opened the folder. Inside were intercepted text messages and bank transfers. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw the final contract.
Target: Elena Vance. Condition: Eliminate. Clean cleanup. The authorization signature at the bottom was unmistakable. It was Clara's elegant, loopy handwriting.
"She wants my babies dead?" Elena’s voice cracked, a primal, maternal rage suddenly replacing her fear.
"No," Marco corrected darkly. "She wants you dead. If you die, she uses the corrupt court system she controls to claim custody of my biological children as their aunt. She uses them as leverage to force me into a marriage of convenience to 'protect the Bellini legacy.' She gets my billions. I get a lifetime of torment."
Elena sank against the wall, the horror of it paralyzing her. Her own sister. The girl she had protected, shared secrets with, and loved.
Suddenly, Marco’s phone buzzed. He answered it, his face turning to stone. He looked up at Elena, a chilling smile touching his lips.

"Speak of the devil," Marco whispered, turning on the speakerphone.
"Marco, darling," Clara’s purring voice echoed through the hallway. "I heard there was a bit of an incident in West Virginia. Did you find my sweet, tragic sister? Or should I start preparing her funeral arrangements?"
