Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist

Hook: You thought you knew who the villain was. But the mastermind was never standing in front of them.
Clara screamed, turning toward her bodyguards. "Kill her! Kill both of them!"
But the two bodyguards didn’t move. They stood like statues, their arms crossed. One of them calmly reached into his jacket and pulled out a badge. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"The house is surrounded, Ms. Vance," the agent said. "We’ve been recording this entire conversation. Conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and international racketeering."
Clara fell to her knees, sobbing frantically. "Marco! Please! It wasn't my idea! I was forced into it! Father forced me! The mafia forced me!"
"Save it for the federal judge, Clara," Marco said, stepping next to Elena and wrapping a protective arm around her waist. Elena didn't pull away. The three-year frost between them was finally beginning to melt.
As the FBI agents cuffed Clara and dragged her screaming out of the room, Elena let out a breath she felt she had been holding for three long years. She looked up at Marco.
"It's over," she whispered. "It's finally over."
"Not yet," Marco said softly, his face suddenly tightening with a strange, lingering anxiety. "There's one more thing, Elena. Something I only discovered tonight when my tech team decrypted Clara’s private server."
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"
Marco walked over to his desk and picked up a final, unprinted document from the printer tray. His hand was shaking.
"The deepfake three years ago... the hitmen... the bankruptcy... Clara was just a puppet, Elena. She didn't have the brains or the capital to execute a conspiracy this massive."
Elena frowned, a cold dread creeping back into her veins. "What are you talking about? My father is dead. Clara is going to prison. Who else is there?"
Marco handed her the document. It was a DNA profile, linked to an offshore trust fund worth hundreds of millions of dollars—a trust fund that had been funding Clara’s lifestyle and paying the hitmen.
Elena looked at the name of the trust fund owner. Her eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing horror.
The owner of the trust fund, the person who had orchestrated the destruction of their marriage, the person who had sent killers after her and her children... was Elena’s own biological mother, Vivienne Vance—the woman Elena believed had died in a car crash when she was a child.
Vivienne wasn't dead. She was alive, hiding in Europe, and she had spent the last decade pulling the strings to destroy the Bellini family from the shadows to avenge a blood feud from thirty years ago.
Elena dropped the paper, looking at Marco in utter shock.
"She's coming for the children next, Elena," Marco whispered, his eyes hardening into flint. "The war isn't over. It’s just begun. But this time... we fight together."
Elena looked out the window into the dark, stormy night. The past was a lie, the future was a battlefield, but as she felt Marco’s hand lock tightly into hers, she knew one thing for certain:
