Chapter 5 - The Grand Masquerade

Hook: The ultimate betrayal deserves the ultimate stage. Welcome to the Bellini execution.

Midnight arrived, bringing a torrential thunderstorm that lashed against the gothic windows of the Wisconsin estate. A single luxury sports car pulled up the long driveway.

Clara stepped out, wearing a flawless white trench coat—a sickening mockery of innocence. She was accompanied by two heavily armed bodyguards, men with cold eyes and Eastern European accents.

Marco met her in the grand, dimly lit study. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the mahogany walls.

"Marco, my love," Clara purred, throwing her arms around his neck. Marco forced himself not to recoil, his body stiff. "I am so sorry for your loss. Truly. Elena was always so fragile... running away like that. It’s a blessing the children are safe with you."

"Let's skip the theatrics, Clara," Marco said, pouring two glasses of scotch. "You brought the papers?"

Clara smirked, sitting gracefully on the leather sofa. She pulled a thick leather folder from her designer bag. "The complete transfer of the Vance estate assets, and a pre-signed co-custody agreement for the twins. Once we marry next week, the Bellini and Vance empires are locked. No one can touch us."

"And what about the hitmen you hired?" Marco asked carelessly, swirling his drink. "The ones who blew out the windows of a quiet house in West Virginia?"

Clara waved her hand dismissively. "Loose ends. They’ve already been paid and sent back to Belgrade. There is no paper trail linking me to Elena’s... unfortunate demise."

"Are you sure about that, Clara?"

The voice didn’t come from Marco. It came from the darkest corner of the room, behind the heavy velvet curtains.

Clara froze, her glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the hardwood floor. The color drained from her face instantly. "Who... who is that?"

The curtains parted. Elena stepped into the firelight. She was wearing the exact same emerald green dress she had worn the night she fled Chicago three years ago. Her hair was perfectly styled, her eyes burning with a righteous, terrifying fury.

Clara stumbled backward, knocking over a chair. "No... No! You're dead! I saw the report! I paid them!"

"You paid for a lie, little sister," Elena said, stepping closer, each click of her heels sounding like a death knell in the quiet room. "Just like the lie you sold me three years ago."
