Chapter 1 - The First ShadowThe ink on the adoption papers was barely dry in the secret biometric vault fifty floors above the city, but the target was already painted. Vincent Crowe—the Wolf—did not know that his deepest vulnerability had just been digitized, sold, and weaponized before the boy, Leo, even woke up in the master suite.

Leo stirred against silk sheets that felt entirely too soft, his small fingers clutching the edge of the blanket as if a ghost would yank it away. Vincent sat in the shadow of the floor-to-ceiling glass, watching the sun bleed over the skyline.

"Dad?" Leo's voice was a soft, tentative scratch.

Vincent turned, every hard line of his face softening in a way his syndicate lieutenants would never believe. "I'm here, son."

Down in the subterranean levels of the city, in a dimly lit warehouse reeking of stale ozone and wet concrete, a man named Marcus Vance stared at a high-resolution drone photograph of the penthouse window. Vance had spent fifteen years in federal black sites and cartel dungeons, waiting for Vincent Crowe to show a pulse of humanity.

"He adopted a stray," Vance murmured, his voice like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "The great Wolf brought a lamb into the den."

His phone buzzed. An encrypted text from an unknown corporate backer inside Crowe Enterprises: The boy is scheduled for his medical clearance at St. Jude’s clinic tomorrow at 10:00 AM. Unescorted transit.

Vance smiled, sliding a silenced pistol into his jacket holster. "Let’s go welcome the new heir."
