Chapter 17 - The Ashes of the PastTwo days later, the fallout in the city was absolute. Elena Vance’s financial empire collapsed like a house of cards as federal investigators raided her downtown headquarters, seizing every asset, document, and hard drive. Realizing she had nowhere left to run and that her own cartel partners were turning on her to save themselves, Elena attempted to flee the country on a private yacht.

She never made it past the harbor.
Julian called Vincent from a secure satellite line while Vincent and Leo were sitting by the stone fireplace, roasting marshmallows on wooden sticks.
"Boss," Julian said, his voice calm and steady. "Coast Guard intercepted Elena's vessel at dawn. She's in federal custody. Her network is completely dismantled. No one is left to challenge us."
Vincent looked across the room at Leo, who was laughing as a marshmallow caught fire, waving it frantically in the air.
"Let her rot," Vincent replied softly. "I don't care about the empire anymore, Julian. Run it, burn it, sell it—do whatever you want with the scraps. I'm retired."
"Understood, Boss," Julian smiled on the other end. "Enjoy your family."
Vincent clicked the phone off, tossing it onto the coffee table. He reached over, gently blowing out the flame on Leo's marshmallow and wiping a smudge of sugar from the boy's cheek.

"Is it bedtime, Dad?" Leo yawned, rubbing his sleepy eyes.
"It's time, little wolf," Vincent smiled, lifting the boy into his arms and carrying him toward the master bedroom.
