Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage ReclaimedBy 2:00 AM, the Rolls-Royce pulled up to the gated entrance of the Vescari Estate in the Upper East Side—a fortress of black granite and bulletproof glass overlooking the Hudson River.

Damian personally carried Elena inside when she refused to step on her injured foot. A private medical team was already waiting in the master guest suite. Within an hour, her foot was stitched and bandaged, her wet clothes replaced with a silk robe, and a hot meal set on the table before her.

Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the rain-slicked Manhattan skyline. She held a warm cup of tea, but her mind was racing.

Damian entered the room, having changed into a crisp dark shirt. He tossed a tablet onto the leather couch.

"Look at the news," he said.

Elena picked up the tablet. The front page of The New York Post hit like a punch to the gut:

MERCER GROUP ANNOUNCES ENGAGEMENT AND $500M HUDSON PLAZA PROJECT Gavin Mercer and heiress Miriam Cole announce wedding date amidst historic urban development deal.

There was a photo attached—taken less than three hours ago inside the lobby of the Mercer building. Gavin had his arm around Miriam, both smiling radiant, flawless smiles for the cameras. In the article, Gavin praised Miriam as his "inspiration" and claimed he had personally authored the architectural blueprints for the Hudson Plaza mega-project.

"Those blueprints are mine," Elena whispered, her fingers tightening around the tablet until her knuckles turned white. "I spent eighteen months working on those structural calculations. I drew every archway, every load-bearing column!"

"And he filed the patents under his name two days ago," Damian said, stepping up beside her. "He knew you were getting close to realizing the truth, so he accelerated the timeline. He used Miriam Cole’s family connections to secure bank financing, using your work as collateral."

"How can he get away with this?"

"Because he believes you have no money, no lawyer, and no proof," Damian replied calmly. "He thinks you are sitting in a hotel room right now, crying into a pillow."

Damian turned to face her, his tall frame blocking the city light. "He doesn't know you are standing in my house. Gavin secured that $500 million development loan through a syndicate of private lenders. Do you know who owns 60 percent of that loan syndicate, Elena?"

Elena looked into Damian's dark, lethal eyes. "Vescari Holdings."

"Precisely," Damian smiled—a cold, dangerous expression. "Gavin Mercer didn't just steal from you. He borrowed money from me using stolen property. Tomorrow morning, I can declare his loan in default for fraud. I can seize his assets, lock his bank accounts, and freeze construction on every site bearing his name."

Elena felt her heart hammer against her ribs. Revenge was right in front of her, dangling on a silver platter. But she didn't just want Gavin broke; she wanted him destroyed. She wanted the world to see him for the parasite he was.

"No," Elena said, her voice turning as hard as steel. "Don't default on the loan yet."

Damian raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh?"

"If you call the loan now, he'll play the victim. He'll blame legal technicalities," Elena said, stepping closer to Damian. "Let him host his grand launch gala at the Plaza Hotel this Thursday. Let him pitch my Hudson Plaza project to the global investors. Let him stand on stage in front of every news camera in North America..."

"...and then we tear the floor out from under him," Damian finished her sentence, a slow, dark smirk spreading across his lips. "I like how you think, Miss Whitlock."
