Chapter 8 - Queen of the Vescari EmpireThe gunshot echoed like thunder inside the hollow warehouse.

Damian didn't hesitate. The second Gavin raised the barrel, Damian threw his body in front of Elena, wrapping his arms around her as they both crashed to the concrete floor.
The bullet whizzed past Damian’s ear, embedding itself in a wooden crate behind them.
Before Gavin could cock the revolver again, Marcus—having regained consciousness on the floor—lunged forward, sweeping Gavin’s legs out from under him. Gavin hit the concrete hard, dropping the gun.
Marcus slammed his elbow into Gavin’s chest, pinning him down and twisting his arm behind his back until a loud SNAP echoed through the room. Gavin shrieked in agony as Marcus cuffed his wrists with heavy steel restraints.
"Target secured!" Marcus growled into his comms unit.
Siren lights—red and blue—flashed through the grime-covered windows of the warehouse. Dozens of NYPD vehicles and tactical units surrounded the building, heavily armed officers swarming through the doors.
"Damian!" Elena gasped, pulling herself up and holding Damian’s head in her lap. His shirt was soaked in blood from his shoulder wound, his face pale, but his eyes were open, looking up at her with fierce intensity.
"Are you hurt?" Damian asked, his voice weak but full of concern. "Did he touch you?"
"I'm fine! You idiot, you took a bullet for me!" Elena cried, tears streaming down her face as she pressed her hand against his bleeding shoulder to stop the flow.
"I promised you," Damian whispered, reaching up with his hand to touch her cheek, wiping away a tear with his thumb. "Nobody will ever hurt you again."
Paramedics rushed into the warehouse with a stretcher.
Within an hour, Gavin Mercer was carried out in handcuffs, captured on live news feeds as he was pushed into the back of a police cruiser—charged with attempted murder, grand larceny, corporate fraud, and arson.
Meanwhile, Damian was rushed to Manhattan General Hospital under armed guard.
For three days, Elena stayed by his hospital bedside. She didn't leave to attend press conferences. She didn't leave to accept the apologies of the Mercer Group board of directors who were begging her to spare them from liquidation. She sat in the quiet room, holding Damian’s hand while he recovered from surgery.
On the fourth morning, Damian opened his eyes to see Elena sitting in an armchair beside his bed, a laptop resting on her lap, surrounded by stacks of corporate acquisition documents.
"You look like a CEO," Damian said, his voice raspy but warm.
Elena looked up, a radiant smile lighting up her face. She closed the laptop and walked over to his bedside.
"That’s because I am," Elena said softly. "Yesterday, the board officially executed the merger. Mercer Group is gone. It has been absorbed into the newly renamed Whitlock-Vescari Global Construction Corporation."
Damian smiled slightly. "And Gavin?"
"His bail was denied," Elena replied, her voice cold and decisive. "He’s facing thirty years in federal prison. Miriam Cole turned state’s evidence against him to avoid jail time, but her family’s reputation is completely ruined. They’re selling their Manhattan properties and moving abroad."

Elena sat on the edge of his bed, taking Damian’s hand in hers. "You gave me back my mother’s legacy, Damian. You gave me back my life."
Damian squeezed her hand gently. "I didn't give you anything, Elena. You built every piece of it with your own hands. I just cleared the garbage out of your way."
