Chapter 6 - The Bloodline LedgerThe skies over the East River were heavy with dark, churning clouds as Damian’s black SUV pulled up to Pier 42.

The old Whitlock warehouse stood at the end of a deserted pier, its corrugated iron walls rusted and weathered by years of salt water and neglect. Rain had begun to fall again, hammering against the roof with a deafening roar.
Damian’s head of security, an ex-Special Forces operative named Marcus, unholstered a suppressed pistol and signaled for his men to secure the perimeter.
"Stay here until we clear the interior," Damian told Elena.
"Damian, be careful," Elena whispered, holding his arm.
Damian touched her hand gently, his dark eyes softening for a brief moment. "He will pay for everything he did to you, Elena. I promise."
Damian and Marcus slipped through the rusted side door.
Elena waited in the backseat of the vehicle, her pulse drumming in her ears. Five minutes passed. Then ten. The silence inside the SUV felt suffocating.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from inside the warehouse, followed by the muffled sound of a gunshot.
Elena’s heart stopped. "Damian!"
Ignoring Marcus’s explicit orders to stay in the car, Elena threw open the door and ran through the pouring rain into the warehouse.
The interior was vast, dark, and filled with old wooden crates and dusty drafting tables. Rain leaked through holes in the high ceiling, pooling on the concrete floor.
"Damian!" she called out, her voice echoing in the rafters.
"Over here, my sweet Elena," a voice mocked from the shadows.
Elena turned. Standing near a rusted iron staircase was Gavin.
His hair was disheveled, his expensive suit stained with dirt and grease. He held a heavy revolver in his trembling right hand. Beside him on the floor, Marcus lay unconscious, bleeding from a wound on his head.
And standing ten feet away, holding his shoulder where dark blood was soaking through his black coat, was Damian.
"Damian!" Elena ran toward him, but Gavin raised the gun, aiming it straight at her chest.
"Move another step, and I put a bullet in her, Vescari!" Gavin screamed, his eyes wild with unhinged insanity.
Damian didn't flinch, despite the blood trickling between his fingers. He stepped sideways, blocking Elena with his body. "Your quarrel is with me, Mercer. Put the gun down."
"My quarrel is with both of you!" Gavin laughed hysterically. "You ruined me! You stripped my company, destroyed my reputation, and turned the whole city against me!"
"You ruined yourself when you chose to steal what wasn't yours," Elena said from behind Damian, her voice filled with quiet contempt.
"Shut up!" Gavin yelled. He reached into his coat with his free hand and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound ledger—the original Whitlock family registry.
"Do you know what I found in your mother’s records, Elena?" Gavin sneered, a terrifying smile spreading across his face. "I thought I was just stealing a few design ideas from a naive girl. But twenty years ago, your mother, Clara Whitlock, wasn't just an architect. She was the silent co-founder of Vescari Enterprises!"
Elena froze. "What?"
Gavin looked at Damian with a malicious smirk. "Your father didn't build Vescari Holdings alone, Damian! Clara Whitlock designed every major port, every warehouse, and every financial structure your family owned! When your father died, he left 40 percent of the Vescari empire to Clara Whitlock!"

Gavin turned the ledger toward them, showing yellowed legal deeds bearing the signatures of both Clara Whitlock and Damian’s late father.
"When Clara died, those shares passed to her only heir—you, Elena!" Gavin laughed maniacally. "You were never just a designer. You are the rightful owner of half the Vescari empire! And Damian knew it! That’s why he searched for you for four years! Not to save you... but to control you!"
