Chapter 4 - The House of CardsThe Cole Security Global Headquarters in downtown Austin, Texas, stood like a monolithic monument to digital supremacy—forty stories of dark glass and reinforced titanium rising into the stormy Texas sky.

Inside the executive penthouse suite on the fortieth floor, Marcus Hail swirled a glass of twenty-year-old single malt whiskey, staring out at the rain-lashed skyline. His reflection in the floor-to-ceiling windows looked calm, composed, untouchable.

"Flight 442 should be wheels up by now," Marcus muttered to his empty office.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an encrypted satellite ping from the airport terminal. He picked it up with a confident smirk, expecting the coded confirmation of the crash.

Instead, the screen lit up with a live video feed.

It wasn't an ocean of wreckage. It was Ethan Cole, sitting behind Marcus's own executive desk, flanked by federal agents and Ray Caldwell.

Marcus's hand froze, the whiskey glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor, amber liquid splashing across his Italian leather shoes. "No..." he breathed, his color draining instantly.

"Surprise, Marcus," Ethan's voice echoed through the high-end office speakers, crystal clear and dripping with absolute venom. "You forgot rule number one of writing code: always check for backdoors in your own architecture."

Marcus lunged for the wall safe behind his painting, spinning the digital combination dial frantically to retrieve his emergency passport and off-shore cryptographic keys.

Before his fingers could punch the final digit, the steel-reinforced double doors of his penthouse blew inward in a cloud of splintered wood and smoke.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Don't move!" Agent Tara Voss shouted, her tactical vest visible beneath her jacket as she stepped through the breach with a tactical team behind her.

Marcus slowly straightened up, his hands raised, a desperate, manic smile stretching across his face. "Ethan! Thank God you're safe! There's been a massive security breach, someone hijacked my comms—"

Ethan stood up from the desk, walking slowly across the plush carpet until he stood inches away from the man he had trusted with his life for over twenty years.

Without a word, Ethan's fist struck Marcus square across the jaw, sending the COO crashing hard into the glass display case.
