Chapter 8 - The Ghost at the GateThe sprawling Cole Estate in the rolling hills outside Austin was an oasis of tranquility—stone pathways winding through manicured gardens, waterfalls cascading into koi ponds, and towering oak trees sheltering the glass-walled main house.

Ethan sat on the back patio at dusk, watching Lily chase fireflies across the lawn with her new friend Noah. For the first time in three years, the house felt like a home instead of a mausoleum.
"You're smiling," a voice murmured from the shadows of the veranda.
Ray Caldwell stepped out into the twilight, holding a secure tablet. His face, usually set in stone, carried a subtle shadow of unease.
"I'm allowed to smile, Ray, aren't I?" Ethan chuckled, taking a sip of his coffee. "The federal investigation is closed, Marcus is locked away in maximum security, and my daughter is actually laughing instead of staring at my phone waiting for me to leave."
"The federal investigation into Marcus is closed," Ray corrected gently, placing the tablet down on the glass table. "But the cyber division just flagged an anomalous data ping originating from our secondary backup server in Zurich."
Ethan's smile faded instantly. The warmth in his chest turned to ice. "Zurich? We disconnected our European routing nodes on Tuesday."
"Exactly," Ray said, tapping the screen to bring up a complex network traffic graph. "Someone didn't just access the server, Ethan. They didn't steal files. They downloaded a parasitic backdoor script that embeds itself directly into your personal biometrics. Every time you log into the corporate terminal, your fingerprint and retinal scan act as a master key for an external network."
Ethan stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the stone patio. "Who?"
"We don't know yet," Ray replied grimly. "But according to the trace routing, the signal didn't come from Marcus's offshore accounts. It came from a holding company registered under a name you haven't heard in twenty years."
May you like
Ray paused, letting the words hang heavily in the warm evening air.
"Diana's trust."
