Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate (The Unexpected Ending)

Three months later, the private lounge of the Mandarin Oriental hotel offered a breathtaking, unobstructed view of Central Park and the Hudson River. Evelyn sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, sipping a cup of rare white tea while reviewing the final liquidation documents of Everett Vance’s personal assets.
The penthouse he had bought to house his mistress had been seized by the bank; his luxury cars had been auctioned off to pay down corporate debts; and his name had become a cautionary tale whispered in every corner of Wall Street—the man who inherited a kingdom and lost it all because he mistook his benefactor for a doormat.
A soft knock sounded at the private suite door.
Arthur Pendelton entered, holding a single, heavy manila envelope bearing no return address. He walked over and placed it gently on the glass coffee table.
"He’s left New York, Madam Chairman," Arthur reported quietly. "Moved back to his hometown in upstate New York, working nights as a stockroom clerk in a hardware store. His mother is living in a assisted-living facility funded by state aid. He tried to file a civil lawsuit claiming spousal manipulation, but our legal team had it dismissed within four minutes."
Evelyn didn't look up from her tea. "Did you deliver the final package?"
"Yes," Arthur nodded, a faint hint of amusement crossing his stern features. "True to your instructions."
Inside the manila envelope sitting on the coffee table was not legal paperwork, nor financial restitution. It was a single, printed photograph taken from the security cameras of the Hudson Yards gala three months ago—the exact moment Everett had dropped his wedding ring onto the marble floor, sneering down at her with absolute arrogance.
