Chapter 4 - Stripped to the Bone

The shockwave of the revelation rippled through the gala attendees. Whispers erupted, sharp and vicious, as the elite of New York—who had spent the last hour laughing at Evelyn—suddenly realized they were standing too close to a sinking ship.
Jonathan Vance, seeing his meal ticket evaporate into thin air, discreetly backed away into the crowd, desperately hoping Everett wouldn't notice him abandoning ship. Other business associates who had promised Everett millions in upcoming joint ventures suddenly found their phones intensely fascinating, furiously typing cancellation emails.
"Guards," Evelyn commanded softly, her gaze shifting to the two Apex security operatives standing behind Arthur.
The two massive men stepped forward, their combat boots thudding rhythmically against the marble. They didn't draw weapons, but their sheer physical presence was enough to clear a five-foot radius around Everett, Madison, and Patricia.
"Remove these unauthorized individuals from the premises," Evelyn instructed calmly. "They no longer hold guest clearance for this venue, nor do they possess the financial standing required for entry."
"You can't do this to me!" Everett lunged forward, his face contorted in a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. All the suave corporate charm he wore like a tailored suit was gone, replaced by the pathetic thrashing of a spoiled child stripped of his toys. "I built this life! I made you who you are! Evelyn, you bitch, you absolute—!"
Before Everett could finish his sentence, one of the security guards stepped into his path, placing a heavy, unyielding hand against Everett’s chest. The force of the shove sent the former CEO stumbling backward, tripping over the very wedding ring he had thrown onto the floor minutes earlier. He crashed hard onto the polished marble, landing squarely on his rear end.
Gasps echoed through the crowd. Madison instinctively stepped away from him, her designer heels clicking backward as distance herself from the disgraced man.
"Everett!" Patricia shrieked, rushing to her son’s side and trying to haul him up by his custom lapels. "Don't just sit there! Call the police! Call someone!"
"Who is he going to call, Mrs. Vance?" Arthur Pendelton smiled thinly, adjusting his tie. "The legal department that now reports directly to Mrs. Hart? Or perhaps the NYPD, whose primary philanthropic foundation is heavily endowed by the Hart Family Trust?"
Everett looked up from the floor, his eyes wide and bloodshot. The realization of his absolute, total ruin finally crashed over him like a tidal wave. He had nothing. No company, no cars, no mansion, no bank accounts, and no credit. Even the suit on his back was technically leased under a corporate account that had just been frozen.

"Evelyn..." Everett choked out, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand. "Please. Ten years. Think of the history we share. We can work this out. We can go home, talk this over—"
"There is no home, Everett," Evelyn interrupted, looking down at him with an expression of profound, chilling indifference. "And there is no 'we'. There is only a man who forgot who held the leash, and a woman who decided to let go."
