Chapter 18 - The Unforgiving Ledger

Back at the Blackstone Crest Tower, long after the gala had concluded and the guests had dispersed into the velvet night, Evelyn sat alone in her private penthouse office on the 68th floor.

The city stretched out beneath her like a vast, obedient circuit board of glowing lights, entirely tamed, entirely hers.

Arthur Pendelton entered quietly, placing a slim, black leather-bound ledger on her desk.

"Everything is settled, Madam Chairman," Arthur reported quietly. "The corporate restructuring is finalized, all federal investigations are closed, and our international acquisitions in London and Tokyo have been successfully integrated."

Evelyn opened the ledger. The pages were filled with meticulous, handwritten notes detailing assets, investments, and future projections—a testament to a lifetime of calculated patience and unyielding discipline.

She picked up a heavy, gold-nibbed fountain pen, her movements precise and unhurried.

"Arthur," Evelyn said without looking up.

"Yes, Madam Chairman?"

"Make sure the endowment for the downtown women's shelter is fully funded through the end of the decade. And ensure that any former executive who attempts to use corporate letterhead or affiliate their name with Blackstone Crest is met with immediate, merciless legal action."

"Consider it done to the letter," Arthur nodded respectfully, turning toward the door.

As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him, Evelyn leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, her gaze fixed on the bright, unblinking lights of the skyline.
