Chapter 5 - The Mistress's Betrayal

Madison watched Everett scramble to his feet, covered in dust and utter humiliation, before she made her calculated move. Survival in high society had always been about alignment, and right now, Everett Vance was radioactive.

"Evelyn, darling!" Madison cooed, instantly shifting her expression into one of innocent, wide-eyed distress as she trotted over to Evelyn, her hands clasped pleadingly. "I had no idea! If I had known he was lying to you, if I had known he was such a deceitful monster, I never would have looked at him twice! He tricked me, Evelyn. He told me you two were already divorced, that you were just a bitter roommate refusing to sign papers!"

The ballroom went dead silent again. Even Everett froze, staring at his mistress with eyes full of utter disbelief.

"Madison..." Everett whispered, his voice trembling. "You... you said you loved my vision. You said you loved me."

"Shut up, you pathetic loser!" Madison snapped, spinning around to glare at him with venomous hatred. "I loved your corporate credit card! I loved your penthouse! The second you lost your job, you became nothing more than an ugly, aging fraud!"

She turned back to Evelyn, batting her eyelashes and forcing a tear to leak from her eye. "Please, Mrs. Hart. You're a powerful, brilliant woman. Surely you can see I was just a victim of his psychological manipulation. Let me be your assistant! Let me help you crush him further!"

Evelyn stared at Madison for a long, agonizing moment. The silence stretched until Madison’s fake smile began to waver, replaced by a nervous sweat that threatened to ruin her expensive foundation.

"Pick it up," Evelyn said quietly.

Madison blinked, confused. "P-pick what up?"

Evelyn pointed her slender finger down at the floor, right between Everett’s discarded wedding ring and the platinum card. "My wedding ring. The one Everett threw down. Pick it up, wipe it clean with your designer dress, and hand it to me."

Madison’s face flushed a deep, humiliating crimson. The collective gaze of two hundred Manhattan elites burned into her skin. Refusing meant losing any remaining chance of social survival; complying meant swallowing every ounce of her inflated pride.

With trembling fingers, Madison slowly knelt down on the cold marble floor. She scooped up the platinum band, used the hem of her wine-stained silk dress to wipe away a speck of dust, and stood back up. With trembling hands, she extended it toward Evelyn.

Evelyn didn't take it with her hand. Instead, she reached out and casually dropped the ring right back into Madison’s open palm, closing the other girl's fingers over it.

"Keep it," Evelyn whispered, her lips curling into a razor-sharp smile. "You two deserve each other. Trash belongs in the bin."
