Chapter 9 - The Boardroom of Absolute Power

The oak-paneled boardroom of Blackstone Crest Holdings smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and expensive espresso. Seated around the massive horseshoe-shaped table were the twenty-four most powerful executives, directors, and regional vice presidents of the conglomerate. Every single one of them sat in absolute, pin-drop silence, their eyes fixed nervously on the head of the table.

The heavy double doors swung open, and Evelyn Hart entered.

She didn't rush. Every step was measured, deliberate, and imbued with an aura of supreme, unshakeable authority. She wore a bespoke obsidian suit with sharp, architectural shoulders, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless chignon. The wine stain from the gala was gone, replaced by the crisp, immaculate perfection of a commander stepping onto the deck of her flagship.

As she took her seat at the head of the table, Arthur Pendelton stood beside her, opening a thick dossier.

"Good morning, everyone," Evelyn’s voice resonated through the acoustic perfection of the room, cool, clear, and commanding.

"Good morning, Madam Chairman," the twenty-four executives chorused in unison, their voices tight with respect and underlying terror. None of them dared look her directly in the eye. They had all watched the news that morning; they all knew that the man who had sat in that very chair forty-eight hours ago was currently sleeping on a park bench, facing federal indictment.

Evelyn opened her folder, sliding a single sheet of paper toward Jonathan Vance, who sat trembling three seats down from her.

Jonathan looked down at the paper. It was his own internal performance review, annotated with red ink detailing every single shady side-deal he had attempted to run behind Everett’s back—deals Evelyn had known about for months, allowing them to accumulate like evidence in a trap.

"Jonathan," Evelyn said softly, not even looking at him. "You have twenty-four hours to resign voluntarily and forfeit your stock options, or you can join your former boss in federal court tomorrow morning. Choose wisely."

Jonathan swallowed hard, a cold bead of sweat rolling down his temple. He didn't hesitate for a microsecond. "I... I tender my resignation effective immediately, Madam Chairman. Thank you for your mercy."

"Meeting adjourned," Evelyn said, standing up gracefully. The entire board rose instantly as one man, bowing their heads until she walked out of the room.
