Chapter 16 - The Empress’s Horizon

One year later, the grand ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental was hosting the annual Blackstone Crest Global Gala—an event far more exclusive, powerful, and opulent than the one where Everett had tried to humiliate his wife twelve months prior.
The room was filled with foreign dignitaries, tech titans, global bankers, and senators who treated every word spoken by the hosts as absolute law. At the center of the dais stood Evelyn Hart.
She wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored midnight-blue velvet gown embroidered with subtle silver threads that caught the crystal light like distant constellations. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, modern waves, and around her neck hung the Heart of Manhattan—a legendary 40-carat blue diamond necklace she had acquired quietly during the corporate restructuring of the previous year.
As she raised a crystal flute of vintage champagne to toast the assembled elite, the entire room fell into instant, respectful silence.
"A year ago, many people in this city believed that power was measured by the title printed on a business card or the noise a man makes when he stands at the head of a table," Evelyn’s voice rang out, clear, melodic, and commanding, carrying effortlessly across the massive hall without the aid of a microphone. "They believed that an empire could be built on sand, sustained by arrogance, and protected by the illusion of control."
She paused, scanning the faces of the most powerful people in the Western world—every single one of whom listened with bated breath.

"True power doesn't shout," Evelyn continued, a faint, dangerous smile gracing her lips. "True power builds the room, owns the foundation, and watches quietly as those who forgot their place destroy themselves against stone. To the future of Blackstone Crest—and to those who never forget who holds the leash."
A thunderous wave of applause erupted through the ballroom, shaking the crystal chandeliers and echoing out across the glittering Manhattan skyline.
