Chapter 2 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

The heavy oak door of the principal’s office flew open without a knock.

Three State Troopers in full tactical gear stepped inside, flanked by an investigator from the state’s anti-corruption bureau. The lead investigator didn't look at Richard, the principal, or Max. He walked straight up to Elena, snapped to attention, and offered a crisp salute.

"Chief Judge Vance. The freeze orders on Sterling Enterprises have been transmitted to all major financial institutions. Your ex-husband’s corporate accounts are locked."

Richard’s face drained of every drop of color. The phone in his hand slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the floor, the screen cracking against the tiles.

"This... this is insane!" Richard stammered, stepping backward until his back hit the framed map of the United States. "You can't do this! You're a family court judge—you handle divorces and custody disputes! You have nothing to do with corporate finance!"

Elena stepped forward, closing the distance between them. The air in the room grew suffocating.

"I was promoted to Chief Judge of the Superior Court three weeks ago, Richard," Elena said quietly, her voice like ice sliding over glass. "My jurisdiction covers systemic corruption, institutional endangerment, and felony assault. And as it happens, your little slush fund that 'funds this school' has been under federal and state surveillance for six months."

She turned her gaze to Principal Vance, who had collapsed back into her leather chair, weeping silently into her hands.

"And you, Principal Vance," Elena continued. "Covering up a violent felony assault by falsifying an incident report as a 'stairwell accident' to protect a corporate donor? That’s not just academic negligence. That’s being an accessory to a crime."

Max wasn't playing his handheld game anymore. The device lay forgotten on the floor, crushed under his father's expensive shoe. He looked at Richard, his voice trembling for the first time. "Dad? Dad, make them stop. Tell them who you are."

Richard couldn't speak. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. The man who had laughed five minutes ago, who had tossed a five-thousand-dollar check like a tip to a beggar, was suddenly realizing that his entire kingdom was built on sand—and the tide had just come in.

"Arrest the boy for aggravated assault," Elena commanded, her eyes fixed on the State Troopers. "And detain Richard Sterling and Principal Vance for obstruction of justice, bribery, and tampering with evidence."

"No! You can't touch my son!" Richard lunged forward, his face contorted in rage, but two troopers intercepted him instantly, slamming his arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, definitive click.
