Chapter 4 - THE MEDIA STORM

By nightfall, the story had exploded across every major news network and social media platform in the country.

#TheJudgeMom was trending worldwide.

Footage from the school’s security cameras—legally seized and made public by the state attorney general's office—showed the entire confrontation in the principal's office. The internet watched in stunned silence as Richard Sterling tossed a bribe across a desk, mocked a mother's appearance, and watched his son proudly confess to shoving an eleven-year-old girl down a flight of stairs.

Within hours, the public backlash was apocalyptic.

Sterling Enterprises' stock plummeted by 78% in after-hours trading as institutional investors pulled out en masse. Board members of partner companies resigned publicly, issuing statements distancing themselves from Richard's criminal enterprise. Protesters gathered outside his sprawling waterfront mansion, holding signs bearing quotes from his own arrogance: "My dad pays for this school. I make the rules."

Elena sat beside her daughter’s hospital bed, peeling an orange while a news segment played quietly on the wall-mounted television.

Her daughter, bandaged and resting comfortably with her arm in a sturdy, professional fiberglass cast, pointed at the screen.

"Mom... is that the bad boy?" she whispered, her eyes wide.

"That's him, sweetheart," Elena said gently, handing her a wedge of fruit. "And he's not going to hurt anyone ever again."

"Are you going to send him to jail?"

"The law will decide what happens to him," Elena said, smoothing her daughter's dark hair. "And the law treats everyone the same. No matter how much money their parents have."

The hospital door opened softly, and a tired-looking detective stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder. He nodded respectfully to Elena.

"Judge Vance. Sorry to disturb you off-hours, but the financial forensic team just decrypted the offshore accounts we seized from Sterling’s primary holding company. You’re not going to believe what else we found."

Elena motioned for him to keep his voice down, stepping quietly out into the hallway so her daughter could sleep.

"What is it, Detective?"

"It’s not just corporate fraud and bribery," the detective said, his face grim. "Sterling didn't just buy the school board. He embezzled millions from a municipal reconstruction fund meant for public children's hospitals—including the very wing your daughter was brought into today."

Elena stared at him, the full, sickening scope of her ex-husband’s greed washing over her. He hadn't just been arrogant; he had built his entire fortune on the backs of sick children.

"File the supplemental charges immediately," Elena said, her eyes flashing with cold fire. "Set no bail. I want his arraignment scheduled for 8:00 AM sharp in my courtroom."
