Chapter 3 - THE WAKE-UP CALL

The school hallway, usually echoing with the cheerful chatter of children coming back from recess, was now a ghost town. The administration wing had been cordoned off with yellow police tape.

Max was sobbing openly now, his designer jacket bunched up around his ears as a female officer gently guided him toward a juvenile transport unit. The invincibility he had worn like armor had shattered into dust the moment he realized his father’s money couldn't buy a judge who happened to be the victim’s mother.

Richard was being pushed toward the exit doors, his tailored suit rumpled, his dignity completely stripped away. As he passed Elena, he caught her eye.

"Elena... please," he choked out, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "We have history. Drop the charges. Let's settle this like adults. Think of Max—he's just a kid!"

Elena stopped, turning slowly to look at the man who had abandoned her and their daughter years ago, believing they were worthless burdens who couldn't survive without his charity.

"When you told my daughter 'like mother, like daughter, both failures,' did you forget something, Richard?" Elena asked softly. "Failures don't rise. We do. And as for Max being just a kid—you taught him that consequences don't exist for people with money. Today, I’m teaching him the hard truth."

Richard opened his mouth to reply, but the trooper shoved him through the glass doors, cutting him off.

Principal Vance was led out shortly after, her professional reputation incinerated in less than an hour. The school board had already initiated an emergency virtual meeting to strip her of her credentials and freeze the institution's operating licenses pending a full forensic audit.

Elena stood alone in the quiet office for a moment. The air smelled of cheap coffee and lingering panic. She looked down at the crumpled five-thousand-dollar check still resting on the edge of the desk.

With two fingers, she picked it up, tore it cleanly into four pieces, and dropped it into the wastebasket without a second glance.

Her phone rang again. It was the hospital.

Elena answered instantly, her professional armor melting away to reveal the mother underneath. "How is she?"

"She’s awake, Judge Vance," the nurse said warmly. "She’s asking for you. And... she wants to know if you brought her favorite strawberry yogurt."

Elena smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that chased away the cold shadows of the room.

"Tell her I'm on my way," Elena said, grabbing her coat. "And tell her the bad guys aren't ever going to bother her again."
