Chapter 5 - THE ARRAIGNMENT

The courtroom was packed tighter than a security drum. Reporters, camera crews, legal analysts, and curious citizens filled every available bench, whispering excitedly as the bailiff banged his gavel.
"All rise for the Superior Court of the State, presided over by Chief Judge Elena Vance."
Elena walked through the heavy side doors with measured, absolute grace. Her black robes billowed slightly behind her. She did not look like the woman who had walked into a school office in a scuffed sweater and a damp cardigan. She was the absolute embodiment of justice.
She took her seat behind the mahogany bench, adjusted her glasses, and looked down at the defense table.
Richard Sterling sat there, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys who looked like they wanted to vanish into the floorboards. Gone was the cocky smirk, the expensive designer suit, the untouchable aura. He looked gray, exhausted, and broken.
Max wasn't in the courtroom—he was in a secure juvenile detention facility across town, facing felony assault charges with no special privileges.
"The court is now in session," Elena said, her voice echoing clearly through the vaulted room. "Calling case number CR-2026-8894, The State versus Richard Sterling."
One of Richard’s defense attorneys stood up, sweating profusely. "Your Honor, we request a continuance, as well as a motion for bail reduction, given my client's medical condition and—"
Elena raised a single hand. The attorney stopped dead in his midsentence.
"Motion denied," Elena said flatly. "Mr. Sterling is charged with multiple counts of felony fraud, embezzlement of public health funds, bribery of public officials, and conspiring to cover up a violent assault against a minor."
She leaned forward, resting her forearms on the bench, looking straight down into Richard’s panicked eyes.
"Mr. Sterling, you once told me that you could buy every attorney in this city," Elena continued, the courtroom hanging on every single syllable. "You told me that rules didn't apply to you because your money spoke louder than the law."
Richard swallowed hard, unable to meet her gaze.
"Let this courtroom—and let every person watching across this nation—understand something very clearly," Elena’s voice rose, commanding and resonant. "The law is not for sale. Justice is not a commodity. And no amount of wealth will ever shield a coward who preys on children."

The silence in the courtroom was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the carpeted floor.
"The defendant is remanded to state custody without the possibility of bail until trial," Elena struck her gavel down once. CRACK. "Court is adjourned."
