Chapter 2 - THE BREACH

“Julian, stop shaking the damn door, you’re acting like a lunatic,” Chloe’s shrill voice cut through the hallway from the top of the stairs. “Just let her rot in there. We have to call the title company by ten o'clock anyway to finalize the transfer of the commercial real estate portfolio before the old lady kicks the bucket.”

“Shut up, Chloe! Something’s wrong,” Julian snapped, slamming his shoulder against the bathroom door once, twice. The frame groaned. “She’s whispering. I heard a woman’s voice. And Elena’s car isn't in the—wait. Is that an SUV outside?”

Through the reinforced frosted glass of the second-story window, a wash of flashing blue and red lights suddenly painted the walls in an eerie, stroboscopic rhythm. There was no wail of sirens—just the terrifying, silent approach of a tactical entry team executing a precision strike.

“Police! Cook County Sheriff’s Department! Open the door! Federal warrant execution!”

The megaphone bellow shook the double-paned windows, rattling the glass.

Julian froze, his hand still hovering an inch from the bathroom doorknob. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse hauled out of Lake Michigan. “Police? How... who called the police? Chloe, did you talk to someone?”

“Are you insane? No! I haven't left this house except to go to the country club!” Chloe shrieked, running down the hall in her designer loungewear, peering out the front window. “Julian! There are four armored trucks blocking the driveway! They have assault rifles! What did you do?!”

Crash!

The front mahogany double doors didn't just open; they disintegrated under a kinetic battering ram. Heavy combat boots pounded across the hardwood foyer below, shouting crisp, synchronized tactical commands.

“Clear the ground floor! Securing the perimeter! Second floor, moving up now!”

Julian spun around toward the stairs, his eyes wide with animal panic. He reached into the pocket of his tailored trousers, his fingers wrapping around a heavy brass-plated Glock 19 he kept illegally unregistered. “They’re not taking me. Not now. I have power of attorney! I’m a legal guardian!”

“Julian, drop the weapon!”

Elena pulled the bathroom door wide open, stepping out into the hallway with the silver-plated revolver leveled directly at her brother’s chest. Her face was an unreadable mask of absolute, glacial fury.
