Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSION

By midnight, the sprawling Vance estate looked less like a home and more like an active crime scene under federal jurisdiction. Mobile command units lit up the cul-de-sac, while forensic accountants carted out rows of banker’s boxes stuffed with forged deeds, fraudulent medical power-of-attorney documents, and hard drives.

In the back of a heated federal transport van parked discreetly down the block, Julian sat handcuffed to a steel bench, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered. His expensive silk tie was gone, his hair disheveled, and his eyes darting frantically toward the door every time a boot scraped on the asphalt.

The door swung open, and Elena stepped inside, shutting it firmly behind her. She didn’t sit. She stood towering over him, holding a thick manila folder under her arm.

“You look terrible, little brother,” Elena said quietly.

“Elena... please,” Julian whined, his voice dropping into a pathetic, wheedling tone. “We’re blood. Mom would never survive seeing her only son go to a federal penitentiary for twenty years. You can bury this. You have the power to spin the narrative, drop the state charges, call it a 'family misunderstanding'—”

“A family misunderstanding?” Elena slammed the manila folder onto the steel table between them. The loud bang made Julian flinch violently. “You starved her. You locked her in a room with deadbolts on the outside. You burned her skin with cigarettes to force her thumbprint onto digital banking authorization forms. And on top of all that, you thought you could use her estate as a money-laundering front for the Syndicate?”

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. “How... how much do you know?”

“I know that the Lake House isn't even yours, and it never was,” Elena replied, leaning in close, her eyes flashing like dark diamonds. “I know you used Mom’s identity to take out three million dollars in predatory commercial loans to buy into the harbor development project—the exact project tied to the city council bribes. You thought by isolating her, nobody would ever audit the estate while you systematically drained her dry.”

Julian’s facade finally cracked completely. A hysterical, broken laugh escaped his lips. “You think I masterminded this? You think I was the big fish?” He shook his head, a dark, manic grin spreading across his bruised face. “Look higher, Elena. Look at who actually funded my law firm startup ten years ago. Look at whose signature is on the secondary beneficiary line of Mom’s trust.”

Elena froze. A cold knot twisted in her stomach. “What are you talking about?”
