Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW BENEFACTOR

“Ask yourself, brilliant prosecutor,” Julian purred, a sickening sense of survival instinct taking over his voice. “Why did Judge Thorne sign that ex-parte order so fast? Was it really out of professional courtesy to his star former Assistant AG... or was he trying to bury the evidence before the federal marshals looked too closely at the trust deeds?”

Elena’s heart skipped a beat, but her expression remained an icy wall of steel. “Don't try to drag Arthur into your filth, Julian. Judge Thorne is one of the most respected jurists in the federal circuit.”

“Is he?” Julian chuckled darkly, leaning forward until his nose was inches from Elena’s. “Check who bought the commercial warehouse property adjacent to Mom’s lake house three months ago under a blind corporate shell named Thorne Holdings LLC. Go ahead. The files are right there in that box you’re holding.”

With trembling fingers, Elena flipped open the manila folder, her eyes scanning the secondary property acquisition deeds attached to the forensic audit. There it was: signature block verified by a notary public.

Arthur Thorne.

The blood rushed out of Elena’s head, leaving a high-pitched ringing in her ears. The judge who had so eagerly signed the warrant, who had dispatched units with lightning speed—he wasn't just an impartial arbiter. He was deeply, inextricably entangled in the very real estate syndicate her mother had been targeted by. By issuing the emergency warrant, Thorne hadn't just saved Martha Vance; he had secured the primary crime scene before any other federal agency could execute an independent search warrant that might expose his own financial exposure.

“He used you, Elena,” Julian whispered, a twisted look of triumph flashing in his eyes. “He knew you were getting close to the truth on the municipal corruption sweep. He used your own righteous anger to sweep his tracks clean, seize the assets under seal, and lock them away where no independent auditor will ever see them.”

Before Julian could say another word, Elena spun on her heel, wrenched the door open, and stepped out into the chilly night air, slamming it behind her.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown sender:

“Counselor Vance. Do not look into the Thorne Holdings file. For your own safety, and your mother’s, leave the jurisdiction tonight.”
