Chapter 3 - THE SKELETONS IN THE VAULT

“You!” Julian snarled, his face twisting into an ugly, contorted mask of hatred as he whipped the pistol out of his pocket and pointed it straight at Elena. “You bitch! You ruined everything! We were a week away from total control!”
Before Julian could cock the hammer, a deafening flashbang grenade detonated at the top of the stairwell.
CRACK-FLASH!
The blinding white light and concussive blast wave knocked Julian off balance, sending him sprawling backward down the carpeted stairs. His weapon clattered against the risers, sliding all the way to the marble entryway below, where a SWAT officer pinned it under the tread of a heavy boot.
“Suspect down! Suspect secured at the base of the stairs!” a tactical commander barked into his shoulder mic, striding past Julian’s groaning, disoriented form.
Chloe let out a blood-curdling scream, collapsing onto her knees in the upstairs hallway as two female deputies zip-tied her wrists behind her back. “You can’t do this! We have rights! We’re respectable people! Julian, do something!”
Julian was already being hauled to his feet, a stream of crimson trickling from his nose where he had slammed into the drywall. As they dragged him past the open bathroom door, his eyes locked onto Martha Vance, who stood wrapped in her silk robe, leaning on Elena for support.
“You ungrateful old hag,” Julian spat, blood fleaking his lips. “After everything we did for you? After putting up with your senile fits?”
“Save your breath for the grand jury, Julian,” Elena said coldly, stepping forward as the lead investigator approached her with a clipboard. “You didn’t just abuse an elderly woman. You forgot who wrote the software architecture for your offshore shell companies.”

The investigator raised an eyebrow, handing Elena a secure data pad. “Counselor Vance, preliminary sweep of the basement safe just yielded something unexpected. It’s not just Martha’s money down there. There are physical ledgers, burner phones, and international wire receipts linked straight to the municipal zoning board corruption scandal you prosecuted two years ago.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying velocity. Julian wasn’t just a common elder abuser—he was the invisible financial conduit for the very syndicate she had spent three years trying to dismantle.
