Chapter 1 - The Ghost AwakensThe line went silent for three seconds. To anyone else, it would have seemed like a dropped call. But to the man on the other end—Vance Miller, a legendary black-ops commander who had spent the last decade buried under a false identity in the suburbs—those three seconds carried the weight of an approaching avalanche.

"Arthur?" Vance’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it held a terrifying, iron-clad gravity.

"I’m still breathing, boss," a gravelly, battle-hardened voice answered from somewhere deep within a classified compound across the Atlantic. "And judging by the tone in your voice, the quiet life is officially over. What's the target?"

"My eight-year-old son," Vance said, his grip on the phone so tight his knuckles turned white, the screen groaning under the pressure. "He’s in a hospital bed at Saint Luke Medical Center with a severe concussion, deep bruises across his face, and internal trauma. His grandfather—my wife’s father, Donald Vance—along with two other thugs, held him down in a driveway and mocked him while he cried for help."

The phone line crackled with sudden, violent static, as if the sheer malice of the revelation was warping the digital signal.

"Family?" Arthur muttered, disbelief cutting through his usual calm. "They targeted a child? Your child?"

"They thought I was just a mild-mannered suburban dad who worked remote tech support," Vance said, his eyes locking onto his own reflection in the dark, sterile hospital window. The soft-spoken, suburban neighbor was gone. In his place stood the ghost—a man whose files had been wiped from government archives, a tactical genius who used to dismantle cartels and rogue syndicates before retiring to bake pancakes with Toby. "They thought they could break my boy to send a message about my pride. They miscalculated."

"What do you need?" Arthur asked without a moment of hesitation. No questions. No moralizing. Just absolute loyalty.

"I need the old unit reactivated. I need satellite clearance over Oakridge County. I need financial tracking unlocked across every shell corporation my father-in-law's corrupt real estate firm uses. And Arthur?" Vance paused, his eyes narrowing into cold, dead slits. "Route my old tactical gear and transport out of the deep storage locker in Sector 4. I'm coming out of retirement."

"Copy that, Commander," Arthur replied, the click of a computer keyboard already clacking furiously in the background. "Welcome back to the living. Let's show them why they should have stayed in bed."

Vance ended the call and slipped the phone into his pocket. He turned back toward Toby's hospital room. Through the glass, he saw a nurse gently adjusting his son’s blanket. The sight of Toby wincing in pain sent a fresh wave of adrenaline surging through his veins—not blind, panicked rage, but cold, calculating, predatory focus.

Donald Vance, Uncle Jasper, and Uncle Kyle thought they had won tonight. They thought they had put a helpless child in his place.

They had no idea that they had just unchained a monster.
