Chapter 5 - The Shadow at the GateThe rain had turned into a steady, heavy downpour, washing away the blood and broken glass of the patio. Vance stepped out into the night, adjusting his tactical collar against the chill.

As he walked past the security gatehouse at the end of the long, winding driveway, he noticed a sleek black SUV parked casually on the shoulder of the public road just outside the property line. The engine was idling, and smoke curled gently from the exhaust pipe.
Vance stopped in his tracks, his eyes narrowing.
The driver's side door clicked open, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman stepped out into the rain, holding a large black umbrella. Her designer trench coat and calm, collected demeanor sharply contrasted with the chaos of the night.
It was Elena Rostova—an intelligence broker from Vienna whom Vance hadn't seen since his final mission before retirement.
"You're rusty, Vance," Elena called out over the sound of the falling rain, a faint smirk playing on her lips. "It took you nearly forty minutes to neutralize a bloated real estate tycoon and his two pathetic lawyers. Back in Prague, you would have wrapped this up in ten."
Vance didn't smile. He walked slowly toward the edge of the property line, stopping just short of the wet asphalt. "What are you doing here, Elena? My retirement was supposed to be permanent."
"Nothing is ever permanent when you carry a ghost's ledger," Elena replied, closing her umbrella as she stepped under the shelter of a giant oak tree. She pulled a heavy manila envelope from beneath her coat and tossed it casually across the wet grass toward him.
Vance caught it effortlessly with one hand.
"What is this?" he asked, his eyes fixed on her.
"Donald Vance wasn't acting alone," Elena said, her tone turning serious. "Your father-in-law is a greedy, small-minded crook, yes. But he didn't orchestrate that ambush on your son just because he thinks you're a bad dad. He was being financed. Someone higher up—someone who knew your true identity before you wiped your files—wanted to test your defenses."
Vance’s heart skipped a beat. The air around him suddenly felt heavy, charged with an invisible, deadlier threat.
"Who?" Vance demanded, ripping open the envelope.
Inside were a series of high-resolution photographs, classified intelligence briefings, and a financial wire transfer receipt originating from an overseas shell corporation. Emblazoned across the top of the documents was a crest Vance hadn't seen in over a decade—the crest of the Syndicate known as The Iron Vanguard, a rogue international faction Vance thought he had eradicated during his final year in active service.
"They found out you survived, Vance," Elena said softly, stepping closer. "They knew where you were living. They used your father-in-law as an unwitting pawn to see if the legendary Ghost of Sector 4 still had his edge—or if domestic life had turned him soft."

Vance stared down at the photographs. The anger that had fueled his assault on the mansion instantly transformed into something much deeper, much colder, and infinitely more dangerous: absolute, calculated war.
"They wanted to see if I was still dangerous?" Vance whispered, a dark, dangerous shadow crossing his face. "Tell them I'm just getting started."
