Chapter 8 - The Ghost's DomainNight fell over Oakridge County like a heavy, velvet shroud.

The nondescript silver sedan Vance had spotted earlier crept slowly down the empty suburban street, its headlights turned off, rolling silently on electric power. It came to a complete stop directly in front of Vance's house.

The doors opened simultaneously. Three figures stepped out into the darkness, clad in matte-black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas, holding suppressed assault rifles close to their chests. They were professional black-ops mercenaries—cleaners sent by The Iron Vanguard to eliminate any witnesses and tie up loose ends connected to Donald Vance's failed intimidation plot.

The team leader, a scarred veteran known only as Apex, made a sharp hand gesture toward his two subordinates.

"Thermal scan shows two heat signatures inside the house," Apex whispered into his comms. "Standard protocol. In, neutralize, sanitize, out. Move."

The three operatives crept stealthily across the front lawn, keeping low against the shadows of the hedges. They reached the front porch in seconds. The point man pulled a sophisticated digital bypass tool from his utility belt, pressing it against the electronic smart lock of the front door.

Beep. Click.

The front door swung silently inward, revealing a dark, completely empty foyer.

"Clear," the point man hissed, stepping cautiously across the threshold, his rifle raised and scanning the living room.

They moved into the house with terrifying efficiency, sweeping the hallway, checking the kitchen, and pushing open Toby's bedroom door. The bed was empty. The room was silent.

"Target is not in the primary rooms. Check the master bedroom," Apex ordered, his voice tense.

The two operatives moved down the dimly lit hallway toward the master suite. The door was cracked open, a sliver of pale moonlight cutting across the dark hardwood floor.

The point man reached out, pushing the door wide open with the barrel of his rifle—

Click.

A heavy, metallic click echoed from directly behind them in the dark hallway.

The operatives instantly spun around, raising their weapons, but they were already too late.

Standing at the end of the hallway, framed by the shadows of the ceiling fan, stood Vance. His face was cold, impassive, his arms resting casually at his sides, holding a weapon pointed with absolute, deadly precision directly at Apex's chest.

"You boys are a long way from home," Vance’s voice cut through the dark, smooth and deadly as a razor blade.

Apex froze, his eyes narrowing behind his balaclava as he recognized the stance, the posture, the terrifying aura of the man standing before him.

"The Ghost..." Apex breathed, his voice tightening with sudden, overwhelming terror. "They said you were dead. They said you buried yourself in the suburbs."

"I tried," Vance replied softly, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "You and your bosses shouldn't have disturbed my boy's sleep."

Before Apex could squeeze his trigger, a blinding flash filled the hallway.

The quiet suburban night was shattered by the sharp, muffled cracks of tactical gunfire—and when the smoke cleared, the ghost had reclaimed his kingdom, leaving behind a warning that the entire criminal underworld would never, ever forget.
