Chapter 17 - Chloe’s Truth

"Come inside, Chloe," I said, stepping aside and holding the front door wide open.

The warmth of the house seemed to hit her all at once, relaxing the rigid posture she had held since stepping out of the sedan. I led her into the kitchen, away from the boys' noise in the backyard, and poured her a mug of hot tea with a generous spoonful of honey.

She held the mug between both hands, staring down at the swirling steam.

"I didn't know about the trafficking ring," she whispered, her voice cracking. "When Doctor Evans approached me at the university health clinic two years ago, she said she was managing an anonymous surrogacy trust for families who couldn't have children naturally due to medical emergencies. She showed me pictures of your boys, Mrs. Miller. She told me how much you wanted a little girl, but how your body couldn't handle the strain."

"She told you that?" I asked, my grip tightening around my own mug.

"She used your story to convince me," Chloe nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek and landing quietly in the tea. "She said I was performing a miracle. And I believed her. I didn't care about the money—well, I needed tuition help, but I genuinely wanted to help a family that had lost its chance."

"Why did you leave her at the hospital then?" I asked gently, keeping my tone entirely free of accusation. "The federal report said you abandoned her under a false name."

"Because Doctor Evans changed the rules at the very end," Chloe’s voice rose, charged with sudden, bitter anger. "Two days before I was due to give birth, she told me the contract was void, that the baby was going to be redirected to a private buyer overseas unless I signed a new waiver doubling the price. She threatened to ruin my academic record, to expel me from my program, to destroy my life if I didn't cooperate."

She looked up, meeting my eyes directly, and the raw honesty in her gaze washed away the last lingering shadows of doubt.

"I couldn't let her take the baby to some foreign buyer," Chloe whispered. "So I smuggled her out during a shift change, drove straight to the suburban hospital where I knew your brother-in-law worked, and left her where I knew James would find her. I didn't abandon her, Mrs. Miller. I delivered her to her real home."
