Chapter 18 - The Bridge

The kitchen was quiet for a long moment, save for the muffled sound of Leo and Toby laughing in the backyard as James tossed a football across the lawn.
I reached across the granite counter and placed my hand over Chloe’s trembling fingers.
"Thank you," I said, the words carrying the full weight of a mother who had nearly lost everything and found her way back to the light. "If you hadn't done what you did, Doctor Evans would have buried our family in a grave of lies. You saved our daughter, Chloe."
She let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally leaving her shoulders as she wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her sweater. "Will you... will you ever let me see her? Just once? To know she’s safe?"
I stood up, walked down the hall toward the master bedroom, and returned a moment later with Lily resting securely in my arms. The baby was awake, her dark eyes wide and curious as she blinked up at the strange, kind face of the young woman who had carried her through the dark.
"Hold her," I said softly, stepping forward and gently transferring the warm, breathing bundle into Chloe’s trembling arms.
Chloe cradled her instinctively, her face crumpling into a mixture of grief and profound, quiet joy as she pressed a soft kiss to Lily's forehead. She didn't try to keep her; she didn't run toward the door. After a long, silent minute, she looked up at me, handed the baby back with a bittersweet smile, and stood up from the stool.
"I have to get back to campus," Chloe said, picking up her coat. "My sociology midterm is on Monday."

"Good luck, Chloe," I said, walking her to the front door and watching as she stepped down the path into the crisp autumn sunlight. "And if you ever need anything—tuition, books, a place for Thanksgiving—our door is always open. You're part of this story now, whether we planned it or not."
As her car pulled away from the curb and disappeared around the corner, James walked up the driveway with a football tucked under one arm and Toby riding on his shoulders, both of them laughing at something Leo had said.
