Chapter 8 - The Medical Conspiracy

"Doctor Evans?" I whispered aloud, the phone slipping from my trembling fingers and clattering against the hardwood floor.
Agent Vance paused near the doorway, Lily cradled carefully in his arm. He turned around, his sharp eyes narrowing as he saw the terror carved into my face. "What did you say?"
Before I could answer, the front door—which Vance had left unlatched—swung wide open.
Doctor Sarah Evans walked into my living room as if she owned the place. She wasn't wearing her crisp white hospital coat today; she wore a tailored black cashmere sweater and carried a leather briefcase that matched the one Mrs. Gable had brought to the hospital. Her expression was calm, clinical, and chillingly devoid of the warmth she had always projected during my checkups.
"Agent Vance," Doctor Evans said smoothly, nodding to the federal officer as if they were old colleagues. "I see you managed to secure the infant without incident."
Vance’s posture stiffened. He didn't look surprised; he looked like a subordinate receiving orders. "The seizure is complete, Doctor. Mr. Miller is in custody. The wife is broken."
My breath caught in my throat. I pushed myself up from the floor, my legs shaking so violently I had to lean against the kitchen counter for support. "What... what is happening here? You know her? You’re part of this?"
Doctor Evans turned her gaze slowly toward me, a faint, condescending smile touching the corners of her lips. "Clara, sweet Clara. You were always so trusting. When James came to me nine years ago asking for private fertility storage options outside the main hospital network, I helped him set up the trust. And when you had your third boy and your body began to give out, I was the one who advised you to stop trying."
"You lied to me," I breathed, the room spinning violently. "You told me another pregnancy would kill me. You said it with medical certainty."
"I didn't lie, Clara," Doctor Evans said softly, stepping closer. "Your uterine wall was compromised after Sam. Another natural pregnancy would have been fatal. But a surrogate gestation using a genetically matched embryo stored in our private vault? That was entirely viable. The only problem was that James didn't want to tell you, because he knew your Catholic guilt would never allow you to hire another woman to carry your child."
"So you fabricated the medical warnings?" I screamed, the grief turning into a blind, blinding rage that tore through my chest. "You used my health as a weapon to orchestrate this entire nightmare?"
"We didn't orchestrate it, Clara—we completed it," Doctor Evans corrected, her voice dropping to a cold whisper. "The clinic needed a clean front to launder the genetic assets before the federal audit shut us down permanently. James provided the funding, the surrogate provided the womb, and you provided the spotless suburban family background to legitimize the asset."

She reached into her briefcase, pulled out a single sheet of paper, and laid it on the kitchen island right in front of me.
"Sign the full relinquishment of parental rights, Clara, and your husband walks out of holding with a misdemeanor trespassing charge and a suspended sentence. Refuse, and James spends the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary for child trafficking, and your three boys become wards of the state by nightfall."
